Marijuana is known as the most commonly used drug in all of America. While many feel the use of marijuana is not dangerous, what they do not realize are the numerous effects it has on the body with its long term use and abuse.
To understand marijuana’s effects is to first understand what types of chemicals are in the drug. The largest most mind altering drug within marijuana is THC. THC is a strong chemical that rapidly passes from the smoker’s lungs into their bloodstream, from which is then transferred to the brain and organs.
Scientists have dug even deeper to see how THC affects the brain and body. What they have discovered is that the brain has cannabinoid receptors which are triggered when THC enters the bloodstream. Some people have more cannabinoid receptors than others. What do these cannabinoid receptors do? Because a large majority of these receptors are located in the pleasure center of the brain as well as the part of the brain important for memory, thinking, concentrating, sensory and coordination, THC thus affects these parts of a person’s life. This means that an abusive smoker can begin losing their memory, have distorted perception or difficulty thinking. The biggest threat is on one’s memory as scientists have discovered it can impact how one can learn or what they can remember for weeks at a time. Continue reading ‘The Effects of Marijuana Abuse’ »

Drug addiction doesn’t just suddenly occur one day. Conditions predispose a person to addiction, and circumstances allow drug addiction to continue. For example, a person who is bored, stressed or depressed may look for solutions to alleviate that boredom, stress or depression. For them, if it’s accessible, marijuana may be the solution. Some say marijuana opens the door to other, more harmful drugs, and in that way marijuana itself is highly dangerous. Is marijuana in fact a ‘gateway’ to other drugs? Here are five answers to that question from experts in the field of drug addiction, substance abuse and treatment.
YES. According to a recent study by the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, there was a pronounced difference in future drug use between kids who used marijuana and those who did not. In fact, teens who smoke marijuana are 85 times more likely to use cocaine than those who do not.
YES. In a study of 311 young adult pairs in 2003, Michael T. Lynskey, Ph.D., found that “Individuals who used cannabis by age 17 years had odds of other drug use, alcohol dependence, and drug abuse/dependence that were 2.1 to 5.2 times higher than those of their co-twin, who did not use cannabis before age 17 years… In particular, early access to and use of cannabis may reduce perceived barriers against the use of other illegal drugs and provide access to these drugs.” Continue reading ‘Is Marijuana a Gateway Drug? 5 Answers’ »

Marijuana is one of the most easily available drugs these days and a marijuana drug test that can be done at home is one of the best and easiest ways that can be used to confirm the presence of drugs in the system. The home drug test specimen that is used can be saliva, urine or hair-based, depending on the specific test that you have chosen.
Depending on the type of sample that is chosen for testing, the results of the test can be known within minutes or days. In addition to that, different samples can form the basis of accurate drug testing for a specific period of time. This means that a marijuana drug test should be chosen based on the time period that you suspect for consumption. The detection periods for each of the home drug tests are preset. However, it should be noted that these differ based on weight, drug tolerance levels, metabolic rates, gender, age, and overall health.
Recent consumption can be detected by using a home test that analyzes a urine sample or a saliva sample. Since marijuana takes a longer time to make it though the scalp then it does into saliva or urine, the hair drug test is generally used for detection of drugs over a longer detection period. Marijuana has long been used by different age groups for its intoxicating effects. They’re used for a wide variety of reasons-recreational, religious, medical and even for self-image purposes. Marijuana is the dried up leaves, stems and seeds of the Cannabis sativa flower. It can be smoked, eaten and used as an ingredient in food.
The dangers of marijuana will always be present, though like many things it depends on quantity and regularity. First of all, if smoked, it has five times the tar content of a cigarette and contains a lot of carcinogens since they don’t pass through a filter the way they do with cigarettes. Regular users often develop chronic bronchitis or severe coughs.
Even though marijuana isn’t physically addictive, it is psychologically addictive. Users start out in small doses, or as casual users, but as they continue their usage, it can get to a point where they find themselves using it alone and eventually it can become a habit. Some examples of reasons that weed addicts use are that they need it to do well in their creative fields of work such as writing, painting or composing music. Others say it helps them to treat their anxiety, insomnia and even improve their self-esteem. Continue reading ‘Dangers of Marijuana – Are the Concerns Exaggerated Or Are They Facts?’ »

Marijuana – or Mary-J, as it is warm-heartedly called by those who are addicted to the substance, is not that different from tobacco when you come to think of it. They are both made from dried leaves. They can also be smoked, chewed and sometimes even sniffed by those who take them. Did I mention that they are also both highly addictive and destructive to the brain cells? Well, they are.
Whereas tobacco has a soothing effect on those who consume it, Mary-J is much more potent because of its hallucinogenic and intoxicating effects on those who try and get hooked. I have seen cigarette smokers’ reform and migrate to marijuana smoking because it makes them ‘high’.
Having been used for several centuries both as an intoxicant and a medication, the control of the substance is a bit difficult because of various beliefs concerning it. While some countries consider it an illegal substance, others think it really isn’t so harmful because it also helps medicinally to improve appetite, prevent the severe weight loss associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
