Prescription drugs can be hazardous to your health, and many are seriously addictive and can even kill.

However, a recent study in Florida, drug-related deaths in Florida reveals that far more people suddenly fall victim to lethal drug combinations – called polydrug abuse – that each drug, and can occur at the recreational users, as well as those trapped by addiction to prescription drugs.

It is common knowledge that addiction to prescription drugs has become a national nightmare.

However, the sudden death of prescription drugs is the subject of the news every day. The Florida study, an analysis of the 168,900 deaths in 2007 by the Medical Examiners Commission, Florida, found that deaths from prescription drugs are three times the rate of deaths caused by traditional illicit drugs such as heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine.

For example, heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine caused 989 deaths, while the legal painkillers like Vicodin and OxyContin caused 2328, the report said. And benzodiazepines, including antidepressants such as Valium and Xanax, led to 743 deaths.

Although the number of people who died with heroin in their bodies increased 14 percent to 110 deaths by the opioid analgesic oxycodone increased 36 percent by 1253 – more than 10 times longer than heroin.

Oxycodone is the heroine as an ingredient in the highly publicized and much battered painkiller OxyContin, is responsible for literally thousands of cases of prescription drug addiction, injury and death throughout the country. Obviously, heroin and oxycodone are interchangeable, and addicts are happy to get his hands on either drug.

However, digging a little further into the statistics, we begin to see how individual deaths poly dangers eclipse. The report shows in 664 deaths involved oxycodone in combination with other drugs, and only 41 himself.

Hydrocodone similar drugs such as Vicodin, Lortab, a lot of other brands and generically claimed 251 deaths in combination, and only 13 on its own. Propoxyphene, known as Darvon, has been linked to 76 deaths in combination with other substances, and only nine for himself.

Do not forget that the opioid analgesics, all on their own, are responsible for hundreds of times more cases of addiction to prescription drugs that the deaths, and each prescription drug addiction is a potential funeral waiting to happen.

Now come Psych drugs – antidepressants, antipsychotics, tranquilizers and beyond, so dangerous in its own way as lethal opioids.

Diazepam is widely prescribed as Valium, was implicated in 171 deaths when combined with other drugs, and only three by itself. And the alprazolam, known by the trade name Xanax, is linked to 556 deaths in combination with other substances, and only six deaths alone.

This in no way reduces the risk of addiction to prescription drugs caused by a single psychological drug on their own, either. Each in itself may cause dependency or addiction to prescription drugs, side effects, withdrawal to injuries and even death.

But 10 times more deaths from prescription drugs in combination with other drugs showed that polydrug abuse is a new and very serious problem.

For those who are still alive and seeking recovery, a combination of prescription drug addiction and polydrug abuse is a complex problem for medical detox drugs to deal with – most difficult to resolve in a single prescription drug . But thank God, when done correctly, the security solutions are possible.

In the final analysis, the Florida report clearly illustrates how quickly polydrug abuse and a life can end unexpectedly, before the victim has the opportunity to manage their dependence or addiction through a medical drug detox program.

As almost any kind of prescription drug has the potential of being abused, you may be wondering why some drugs are more prone to being abused than others. Oxycontin ranks amongst the highest in prescription drugs that are in this category.

There are a number of reasons why Oxycontin ranks so high. First, Oxycontin is an opiate. This semi-synthetic form of opiate is one of the most powerful pain medications available. Its Schedule II classification means that while it Oxycontin is very effective when used correctly, it must be both dispensed and monitored carefully due to its potency being a risk-factor for abuse and addiction.

A person can develop psychological dependence, physical dependence, or both, simply due to the effectiveness of this drug. The person may begin to rely so heavily on the drug for its painkilling effects that he builds up a tolerance to the drug, thus needing higher or more frequent doses in order to gain the results he needs. He may also become so accustomed to the absence of pain caused by Oxycontin use that he begins to fear pain enough to become completely dependent upon the drug.

Another reason why Oxycontin poses the danger of abuse is that it is often prescribed without proper discretion. There are far too many instances of Oxycontin being prescribed for minor medical issues where a less powerful and less addictive drug would have been more appropriate.

A third reason for the misuse of Oxycontin is that many physicians do not fully investigate a patient”s drug history prior to prescribing Oxycontin or other narcotics. This negligence can range from simply making the mistake of prescribing Oxycontin for a medical issue when the patient”s history should have made it clear that a medication with a lesser-addictive nature would have been the wiser choice, to even prescribing it when painkillers are not necessary at all.

In addition, attempting to cease the use of Oxycontin often causes withdrawal symptoms. While these can range from minor physical discomforts to more serious physical and psychological disturbances, many who abuse Oxycontin respond to withdrawal symptoms by feeling the need to use the drug even when their medical issue no longer warrants it.

Oxycontin is an effective drug when it is used properly. The risks of abuse can be significantly decreased by ensuring that the patient”s medical issue and personal history make the use of this particular drug appropriate, and careful monitoring to ensure that it is indeed used correctly.

Marijuana is a tobacco-like substance, dull in colors like green, gray or brown, made up of dried leaves, stems, seeds and flowers of the hemp plant. Known by over 200 names, it is an addictive substance commonly referred to as pot, herb, weed, grass, boom and hashish is its stronger form. In whatever form it is taken, it alters the way the mind works as it contains an active chemical called THC, or delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol. Initially used for medication and healing, it became dangerous, dreaded drug in the 1970s as its addictive powers gripped thousands and became a forbidden drug that was smuggled into countries.

Marijuana is terribly addictive and obsessive. It is smoked almost like a cigarette and gets absorbed into the body almost instantaneously. It reaches the brain and united with receptors of nerve cells, affecting that part of the brain, which controls pleasure, thought, concentration, memory and coordination. It then impedes these activities. A person gets addicted to it very easily and it is peddled so much that it is often easier to procure than alcohol. Addicts think about the drug all the time, where and how to get it, how to raise funds for it, forgetting values and principles just to be able to get marijuana, and the fear of not getting it in the future. The biggest problem of its addiction is the body’s physical craving for marijuana, and more and more quantities are required to reach that level of bliss.

Marijuana addiction is far tougher to shake off than alcohol. It is so addictive that the individual is unable to give up when he knows its ill effects and the consequences of its addiction. It gets him caught in the vicious circle of wanting to take it to escape the consequences of its consumption. The stigma attached to it engulfs family members as well.
Marijuana addiction leads to problems with remembering, incoherence, inability to learn and leads to absenteeism, lack of seriousness at work. This could culminate in losing one’s job and earning capability. It would also turn him into a social outcast often disowned by friends, and sometimes even by family. A marijuana addict is even treated as a threat to society and many steer clear o him for fear of getting dragged into this addiction.

This addiction is really like a disease, which needs to be treated over a period of time with medication and counseling. Behavioral therapy adopted by some organizations committed to eradicating marijuana addiction are known to get encouraging results in hundreds of cases. An example of one such organization is the Spencer Recovery Center, which hires professionals only to treat marijuana addicts and have a fantastic success rate due to their committed approach.

Smoking marijuana is a growing problem across the world. As the cost continues to come down, more and more people in all walks of life are turning to the “evil weed”. If you are fed up of being addicted to “pot”, there are many options out there that will help you to try and quit smoking marijuana.

Whilst marijuana is addictive, it is the lesser of the evils when compared to other drugs such as heroine. However, as it is most often mixed with tobacco and smoked, it can be extremely habit forming.

The effects of marijuana vary significantly from person to person. For the lucky few, they actively do not like the drug. For many, it relaxes them and lightens the mood, often resulting in a fit of the “giggles”. For some, it transports them to a relaxed place where the responsibilities of life simply ebb away.

What causes people to form a habit can also vary. Whether it is due to peer pressure, boredom, or simply to try something new. For those who form a daily habit, the effects can be disastrous; resulting in apathy, lack of ambition and an eventual lack of respect for the user.

If you are not happy with facing your problems in public, there are many online sources or books available. These are the least effective ways to quit smoking marijuana. Whilst will power and a self determination are required, having a support network is vital.

There are many trained counselors that can help. Available through your doctor, you are able to have one to one or group sessions. Many also incorporate meditation sessions, to help focus the mind on more positive thoughts.

More physical techniques are also very effective. Amongst these is yoga. Working much the same way as meditation, but also helping with breathing, this is a method that enjoys much respect across the world.

Peter Hill is an author and expert on helping people change their habits. He runs an informational website with articles, video’s, ebooks and Quit Smoking Marijuana Tips.

Heroin is an opiate derived from the opium poppy. Opiates have long been used in pain relief and heroin is in the same category. In the UK, a cocktail is made from heroin and alcohol and given to terminally ill cancer patients to relieve them of pain.

Heroin use has been popular with teenagers since about the sixties and reached alarming proportions in the US in the nineties. It is still used by teenagers and adolescents though it is becoming increasingly difficult to procure.

Heroin is rapid-acting, and one of the fastest drugs to become addictive. Most users start by snorting or smoking, secure in a misguided belief that in so doing the drug is not addictive. But this is not the case, and once the body becomes addicted they graduate to injecting themselves. Users typically relate experiencing a surge of pleasurable sensation, a “rush”, the intensity of which depends on the quantity taken and the speed at which it reaches the brain. With regular use intolerance sets in which requires greater or more frequent doses to satisfy the addiction.

Here are some of the symptoms that can warn parents of drug abuse:

Cycles of restlessness, increased energy, and insomnia.
Abnormally slow movements, speech or reaction time, confusion and disorientation.
Abrupt weight loss or gain
Bouts of excessive sleep
Unexplained changes in clothing, such as a switch to long sleeved shirts, to hide needle scars.
Presence of drug paraphernalia such as unexplained pipes or syringes.
A persistent cough or bronchitis with coughing up excessive mucus or blood, the result of smoking heroin.
Chronic sinusitis or nosebleeds from snorting heroin.

If any of these physical symptoms are noticed, it is time for the parent to seek expert counseling to deal with the problem.

Heroin, an opiate derived from opium is rapid-acting and extremely addictive. Its most common form is as a white powder which is snorted, smoked or injected. But in a less refined form it comes as a black tarry substance.

Most users start by snorting or smoking, secure in a misguided belief that in so doing the drug is not addictive. But this is not the case, and once the body becomes addicted they graduate to injecting themselves.

Soon after injection or inhalation, heroin enters the bloodstream and crosses the blood-brain threshold. Users typically relate experiencing a surge of pleasurable sensation, a “rush”, the intensity of which depends on the quantity taken and the speed at which it reaches the brain. Other sensations are a warm skin flushing, dry mouth, and a lethargic sensation in the extremities. Nausea, vomiting, and severe itching are possible side effects. Heroin is so easily addictive because of the speed at which it affects the brain. The strength is frequently unknown which causes an addict to overdose and risk possible death.

With regular use intolerance sets in which requires greater or more frequent doses to satisfy the addiction.

Heroin treatments include medication and behavioral therapies. The first step in treatment is generally detoxification under medical supervision to ensure a safe passage through the withdrawal period. Certain medicines are administered to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Detoxification is only the first step and is followed by medication to prevent a relapse.

There are several approaches to behavioral therapy which can be delivered in outpatient or residential settings.

Before we directly proceed on how to deal with crack cocaine withdrawal, let us first get ourselves fully acquainted with what crack cocaine is. If you are thinking that this drug is the ordinary cocaine, you are wrong. Although very similar to cocaine, this drug is processed as it is mixed with baking soda or ammonia and water which then form into rocks. This substance is usually cheaper to buy. It is often smoked in pipes by crack addicts.

But what makes this substance so addictive? A user feels a certain type of high whenever this substance is smoked. This certain high is like euphoria to the user. But because this high doesn’t last long, it makes the user crave for more to feel it again. This drives the users to chase over this drug, wasting their money and their lives as well. This also leads drug users to commit crimes such as robbery in pursuit of this particular high.

If you are a crack cocaine addict yourself, then you must be feeling its consequences right now. Like any other forbidden drugs, using this drug has certain negative effects to its users’ health. Abbusers of this drug often experience paranoia, depression, anxiety, and mood swings. Being a regular user of this drug makes you adaptive to a paranoid way of life. In worst cases, users experience intense cravings for the drug without being satisfied. Once a person used the drug, he becomes drug dependent and is unable to function well without it.

Aside from its initial negative side effects, crack cocaine addicts are also vulnerable to its long term effects. Such effects include having problems with bodily functions, hallucinations, depressions, and delirium. The worst effects of being addicted to crack cocaine are heart attacks and fatal respiratory problems that may eventually lead to death.

Now that you know fully well the consequences in using crack cocaine, maybe you are planning to get out of the addictive habit yourself. But getting out of it is not that easy. Cocaine crack dependents often find it very hard and agonizing to stop their addictive habits. Studies reveal that those who tried to stop from crack cocaine addiction experience withdrawals with painful symptoms such as intense cravings, anxiety, hunger, irritability, and paranoia. These mentioned symptoms are often too hard for the drug user to endure which only makes him go back to his addictive cycle. Bottom line, crack addicts are not capable of stopping their drug addiction all by themselves.

The most effective way to deal with crack cocaine withdrawal is through the aid of addiction specialists. Crack addicts are subject to undergo treatments for them to fully recover and start a drug free life. Medical detox is used for crack addicts, helping them to stay clean and recover for longer periods of time.
