Alcohol consumption is a much studied, and sometimes controversial, subject. Most modern doctors and nutritionists agree that a small amount of alcohol can actually be beneficial to the body. It will do little harm that way. However, for a heavy drinker or alcoholic, there can be a variety of serious health problems caused by alcohol consumption.

The human body is only able to metabolize a small amount of alcohol at a single time. When a person drinks more than this amount of alcohol (approximately one ounce per hour), the alcohol will be absorbed into body and affect nearly every internal organ until it is slowly metabolized.

The liver is one of the most vulnerable internal organs. It is not easy for the liver to metabolize alcohol, and it actually causes some very dangerous side effects. The liver breaks down the alcohol by removing hydrogen. This means that excess hydrogen will be left in the liver. This can cause liver damage.

In addition, while the liver is breaking down the alcohol, certain important enzymes and nutrients become unavailable to the rest of the body. This causes the liver to become saturated with these enzymes and pockets of fat develop. These cause liver disease which may cripple a person for life.

Heavy alcohol consumption also increases the chances for heart attack and stroke due to the rise in blood pressure. Alcohol, when consumed by pregnant women, can cause fetal alcohol syndrome. Excessive drinking may even increase the size of the kidneys, running the risk of kidney failure.

It can affect the way a body metabolizes sugars as well. It can cause hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, which both run their own very dangerous health risks including coma and death. It can also contribute to obesity in some people.

Alcohol also affects the brain, both physically and psychologically. Physically, it can cause a rise in acidity in the body that can contribute to the loss of memory and some neurological functions. It can even cause irreversible brain damage. This can lead to permanent tremors or a stroke.

Psychologically, alcohol is a depressant and can cause serious depression and anxiety. The results of these conditions can be malnutrition and, again, obesity. People who are heavy drinkers who experience these problems often begin to drink more which can lead to even more health problems.

While drinking in moderation can be beneficial, drinking heavily will have the exact opposite effect and can amplify medical problems that may have been of little consequence before.

People have been enjoying alcohol for thousands of years. In fact, some archaeological evidence has pointed to the existence of purposely fermented beverages in the Neolithic period at about 10,000 B.C. While alcohol now serves mainly as a social lubricant, it once provided people with the only source of clean, sterilized drinking because water was usually tainted with sewage or other wastes, carrying a number of diseases. Over the thousands of years of drinking, we are learning more and more about the factors that affect our alcohol tolerance.

First, it is important to realize the genetic implications of alcohol tolerance. Some studies have shown that the ability to tolerate alcohol can be passed down genetically. Researchers believe this because descendants from ethnic groups who have long participated in alcohol consumption, such as Europeans, have higher tolerance than groups who have not had alcohol present in their culture for very long, such as Native Americans.

Additionally, in contrast to alcohol tolerance, alcoholism is also thought to be somewhat genetic. You may be predisposed to becoming dependent upon alcohol if a relative of yours has also struggled with the problem.

Next, gender also affects a person’s ability to tolerate alcohol. While many people believe that men have a better tolerance than women, females actually have more enzymes that process the substance. Although this results in flushing alcohol out of the body sooner, it also results in women achieving a higher blood alcohol content, or BAC, faster than men.

On the other hand, women’s ability to process alcohol faster than men is often overshadowed by their higher body fat percentage. Alcohol gets stored in fat, so the higher a person’s body fat percentage is, the faster they typically feel the effects of alcohol. Additionally, it can stay in the system longer rather than being flushed out and lowering your BAC. People with more muscle flush alcohol out of the body faster as well. Lastly, the bigger a person is, the more water they usually have in their system, which also helps rid the body of the substance.

It’s also true that a person can develop tolerance from drinking frequently. The body’s liver produces more enzymes that digest alcohol, and the brain gets used to operating with some of its receptors dulled to the physical effects of alcohol. There are different types of alcohol tolerance, based on how your body becomes used to the substance. This includes everything from instantaneous tolerance to even environmental tolerance.

Sometimes, if you have a high tolerance for alcohol, you may be tempted to drive after drinking. However, even if you may not feel the effects of the substance, your BAC will still reflect that you’ve been drinking-possibly over the legal amount. This can result in a DWI or other such citation, which can permanently mar your record.

If you or someone you know has gotten a DWI, you should speak to a lawyer about the next steps that you can take in dealing with this ticket.

Various festivities and celebratory occasions call for a drink. The slight euphoria from controlled alcohol consumption may leave a pleasant feeling afterward but excessive alcohol consumption leads to intoxication which may be dangerous. Due to festivities and occasional drinking, most of us have experienced a bout of unpleasantness the morning after excessive drinking.

Commonly known as hangover, its effects vary from person to person in terms of strength and intensity. It usually involves a headache, inability to concentrate, sickness, dizziness, dehydration, mild diarrhea, tiredness and weakness. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. Listed here are some of the hangover tips to prevent and cure you from a hangover.

Before you start guzzling down that beer or alcoholic drink, remember to fill your stomach with food. Having food will prevent alcohol from entering the bloodstream directly, thus keeping you sober for a longer period of time. You will also need to continuously hydrate your body by drinking water or juice. Alcohol leads to dehydration. That explains why you feel dry in the mouth after a certain amount of alcohol consumption. To be able to think ahead will save you the agony of having to wake up and prepare your hangover cure the morning-after. You might be so exhausted and groggy that you cannot even operate a blender. Therefore, prepare a hangover cure before you head out and refrigerate the drink. That way, you’ll have a cure ready the next day. The only thing you’ll need is to be able to get yourself to the refrigerator.

If the damage is done, there are various hangover tips available to cure that bout of sickness. You can try taking a water-soluble painkiller for that headache and antacid to stabilize the acidity of your stomach. If you are up to it, try going for a stroll and breathe in fresh air. It helps to clear the mind. If nothing works and you still feel terrible, you can always stay in bed. You will eventually feel better after the much needed rest.

These hangover tips are meant to help you overcome occasional bouts of hangover. Bear in mind that while drinking may be fun momentarily, the after-effects of excessive drinking is thoroughly unpleasant.

At the end of this article, I’d like to share cool websites with more tips on topics like tips hangover and how to hang drywall. Visit for more information.

Alcohol detox is for you if you consider that you are having problems with alcohol. What is alcohol detox and what does it involve? Alcohol detox is the withdrawal process which is done in a controlled way, unlike that of “Cold Turkey”. You are going to notice certain signs if you have an alcohol problem. A few simple questions will tell you whether or not you have an alcohol problem. How quickly do you drink, is it very fast? When you are down do you take a drink feel better? Do you often drink on your own? Is the level of your alcohol consumption increasing? When you have been drinking have you ever had memory loss? Do you find yourself having to hide your alcohol problem from your family and friends? Are there concerns that your family and friends have about your drinking habits?

If you have answered yes to more than three or four of these questions you have no choice but to consider alcoholic detox. You should contact your physician at this stage. You have to tell your physician the truth because they are in a position to be able to give you the best support. You must explain everything about your drinking habits. Please never attempt alcohol detox before your physician has been consulted.

In alcohol detox, what choices do you have? Again you will have to ask yourself a few questions. As you been drinking been going on for a long time? How would you describe your fitness level? What kind of alcohol or you consuming and what is your level of consumption? How old are you? Do you abuse other drugs? Answers to this questions will determine whether you need to attend an alcohol detox center either as an outpatient or inpatient. This is going to tell you about what the possibilities are for detox from alcohol at home. Your health is the only concern here.

So if you are considering alcohol detox as an option for yourself, or you know somebody who has an alcohol problem and may need alcohol detox then you should consider and alcohol detox center as a possibility. If you are considering alcohol detox at home then you have obviously made the first step in the right direction. There are many people who have alcohol problems on this earth of ours who do not even realize it yet. Your actions after this will determine how successful you will be.

Is it time to take a break from drinking alcohol? Have you been going over the top with the alcohol consumption lately? You should be able to tell by listening to your body. How do you feel? Do you have aches and pains beyond the normal? Do you feel tired and listless? Maybe a detox from alcohol is for you.

Life is like that sometimes. The parties all seem to come at once. First the Jane’s wedding, then Tom’s christening, then your best mates big birthday bash. It is very easy to lose track of yourself and drink way too much over a few weeks. But it can have negative consequences in the long run.

The facts about long term alcohol abuse are everywhere. Liver damage, heart disease, etc, etc… It is very easy to go from one night a week, to two nights. From a couple of really good sessions to a few beers in front of the TV. A couple of beers for the game to hide and go seek with the whiskey bottle. Once you are there, the risks to every part of your life are massive.

So, you’ve been out to one too many parties lately and you’re feeling the worst for wear. This is where you want to detox from alcohol.

It’s easy for you if you are only a light drinker who just had a bit too much lately. You just stop drinking. It allows your body to flush all the harmful toxins that have been making you feel a little crappy. I would normally go off the booze for a month. You can still go out if you want. Be the designated driver. You will get a great insight into what a drunk person really looks like…interesting huh!

If you are becoming addicted to alcohol, here is where you will find out. You may crave a drink. You may be getting the shakes or the sweats. If you are getting any unusual symptoms at all when you stop, you need to seriously reconsider your drinking, because more than not, these are the first signs of a problem.

The good news is that you have discovered the problem before it is too late. You can do something about it. Take these breaks away from alcohol every so often, allowing your body to tell you when. You will feel much better in the long run. And you will avoid the disease that has killed billions. This disease that we call alcoholism, as we speak is ruining millions of lives. To your best health.
