The number one beneficial aid to cocaine treatment and also for staying off of the habit is a simple step you can and must do for yourself. The old adage, “birds of a feather flock together” goes very well with this scenario of cocaine treatment. Those which you are around will influence what you do!

When you look back at the reason and the surroundings in which got you started down the road to a cocaine addiction, you have to admit that the people you were with probably had a great effect on your getting started. The surroundings in which you put yourself played a great part in getting hooked and also in staying hooked. To get off and stay off, you must choose well your surroundings and the people with which you hang out with.

The people which you were accustomed to hanging out with probably did drugs too. And the surroundings in which you hung out probably was conductive to your habit also. Just think about people who you are around often, if they have a positive outlook then that rubs off on you. If they have the negative kind of outlook and are often grumbling and complaining, then you also pick up that negativity. The same applies to getting off cocaine, if you are in a positive and productive atmosphere it will be conductive to your staying off cocaine.

There is an old saying “resist temptation” and the key to resisting temptation is to not be around it! If you do not put yourself in the tempting position it is easier to resist. And if however, you put yourself in a tempting situation (like where others are doing it) then it is naturally harder to resist. If you keep yourself in a supportive atmosphere and with others who can and will give you support, then it is much easier to resist the temptation of picking the habit back up again.

The number one beneficial aid to staying clean from a cocaine habit is staying away from the drug scene, and the people who associate with it. Changing your group of friends sometimes can be hard to do. But it will be the most positive step you can do to isolate yourself from the temptation.

A new group of positive and supportive friends can and will be the best measure you can take towards staying clean. When you end up in jail with a drug charge, you will not get to pick your friends – and you will wish you had done a better job of picking friends while you had the chance.

Is cocaine addiction a possibility in a loved one’s or your own life? Cocaine use can be an extremely difficult thing to handle and if you have become involved in its use, it can be a hard thing to know if the line between casual use and addiction to cocaine is being crossed. No matter what the reason, it is important for you to understands the risks and dangers of cocaine addiction.

Addiction is often defined as the need to frequently use increased doses of the drug, despite the physical and psychological harm that it does. The compulsion to use the drug is so strong that the addict will commonly give up their personal relationships and their value system in order to support it.

There are many factors which might influence a person to become addicted to cocaine. First, cocaine is a chemical that is easy to become addicted to; like any other stimulant, it affects the neurochemistry of the brain. Second, some people are more prone to become addicted than others. If one or both of your parents was particularly susceptible to cocaine, there is an increased likelihood that you are susceptible as well. Third, cocaine is a drug to which the human body can build up a tolerance. When this tolerance occurs, an increased amount of the drug is necessary to create a similar sort of high.

Cocaine is an extremely addictive drug. As a stimulant, it inhibits the absorption of dopamine into the body’s system, creating a powerful, prolonged high. Because many users develop a resistance to it fairly quickly, they never achieve the same that they got from it originally, resulting in them taking larger and larger dosages to try to achieve the same effect. One of the symptoms of cocaine addiction is a constant increase in the amount ingested.

Addiction is also likely when withdrawal symptoms are seen when the drug is taken away or reduced. Being physically sick or depressed are both signs that the person might have become addicted. In terms of physical effects, nausea, a runny nose and constant twitching are signs of withdrawal, and in terms of psychological effects, depression, anxiety and agitation can be indication of a withdrawal in full progress.

Cocaine can result in cardiovascular disruptions and respiratory issues. Neurological problems like strokes, seizures, and migraines can also result from cocaine use. The issues that result from cocaine use alone are severe, but with addiction, can become even worse. Even the method of taking can become dangerous. Ingesting it orally can result in bowel gangrene and injection can lead to a variety of blood-borne diseases and complications.

If you suspect that you or someone you love might be in danger of cocaine addiction, understand that you are not alone. Thousands of people come to this realization every year, and start the journey to recovery.

The cocaine is an addictive drug producing a lot of physical and mental aberration. As the addiction becomes a continuous process the mental faculty is affected to such an extent that the patient is unable to cope with the side effect of drug abuse. The cocaine addiction is a cause of concern as it takes a strong hold on the mental sphere by altering the thought, feeling and action. The mind is affected in such a way that an obsession to the drug makes the person to do illegal activities which he/ she would never have attempted otherwise. As the exhilaration after cocaine intake lasts only for 15-30 minutes the desire to maintain it for a longer span of time is so great that the addict commits criminal activities.

The drug cocaine interferes with the neurotransmitter, dopamine and serotonin to produce the symptoms like increased heart and respiratory rate. As the drug has an effect on the chemical receptors of the brain, the repeated stimulation of the nerve tracts comes out with violent symptoms which may be harmful to the body.

Some of the red line symptoms to identify the addicted person
- The physical symptoms produced during the course of addiction make the person dependent on drugs. The cocaine detoxification process with the help of the licensed medical personnel must be conducted at the earliest. This procedure requires medication to counter the physical illness produced by the drug abuse. Initially there is exhibition of withdrawal symptoms, but to tide over the problem the addict should be strong willed.

-The symptoms may range from nose bleed in cocaine inhalers to severe cardiac and respiratory distress. The intake of cocaine initially produces euphoria, excitement, increased mental alertness and hallucination.

-Once the person gets addicted symptoms of nose bleed, loss of smell due to sensory nerve disintegration, rapid heart beat, chest pain, dilated pupils, stomach cramps, fever, blurred vision, vertigo, seizure, nervousness, insomnia, difficulty in thinking and concentration, loss of interest in sex, weight loss, mood swings and paranoid thoughts start exhibiting.

-The over dosage of cocaine can produce restlessness, seizure, hallucination, respiratory and cardiac failure and eventually death.

-As the patient tries to stop the drug the withdrawal symptoms like sweating, trembling, muscular aches, lack of interest and energy, depression sets in which makes the journey to freedom from the drug habit difficult.

-Cocaine users may suffer from complication due to associated disease like HIV, eczema and Hepatitis. The symptoms of this condition may complicate the nature of illness for the addict and make the treatment a tedious process.

It is difficult to break the habit of cocaine drug intake because it produces a sense of satisfaction which every individual yearns. The physical and psychological dependence prolongs the treatment for the patient.

According to Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners, a company conducting research on drugs for the treatment of addiction, “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recognized that cocaine addiction is a ’serious, life-threatening condition for which there is no current drug treatment,’ and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has stated that finding a pharmacological treatment for cocaine addiction is their number one research priority.”

Other researchers view it differently, however. Allan Parry, a drug counsellor in Liverpool, U.K., told New Scientist that such work was “only likely to be relevant to a tiny minority of people. People often give up cocaine because their lifestyle changes or they just grow up.”

Fighting fire with fire–using drugs to treat drug addiction–will likely remain a controversial approach for years to come.

What is the rationale for the use of drugs in the treatment of drug addiction? There are two basic approaches. Scientists look for medications that help patients initiate abstinence, and they look for drugs that help prevent relapse once the patient has achieved abstinence. The categories are not hard and fast. For example, a drug that effective reduces the reinforcing effects of cocaine by reducing the intensity of withdrawal can theoretically perform both functions at once. On the other hand, a drug that blunts the euphoric effects of cocaine–a drug that takes away the best of the buzz, no matter how much cocaine is ingested–can also succeed at the twin tasks of abstinence initiation and relapse prevention.

The search for medications with which to treat cocaine addiction has been in progress much longer than equivalent efforts aimed at methamphetamine addiction. One research target of long standing is modafinil, an odd-duck drug sold as Provigil for the treatment of narcolepsy. A mild stimulant, modafinil does a little bit of everything, pharmacologically tweaking dopamine, noradrenaline, anandamide and GABA receptor systems. Perhaps for this reason, the drug seemingly has been tried for almost everything, from Alzheimer’s to atypical depression to jet lag The U.S. military has reportedly shown some interest in it.

According to published research by Kyle M. Kampman in the June 2008 Addiction Science and Clinical Practice (PDF), modafinil-treated human subjects used less cocaine than placebo-using counterparts did in several recent small-scale studies. “In a double blind pilot trial with 62 cocaine-dependent patients, those who received modafinil submitted more cocaine-metabolite-free urine samples than placebo-treated patients (42 vs. 22 percent; Dackis et al., 2005).”

Propranolol, better known as the beta-blocker Inderal, works primarily by suppressing adrenaline and noradrenaline levels. In human studies to date, propranolol has shown itself most effective with the most severely cocaine-addicted patients. Studies by Kampman have shown that propanolol-treated patients stay in treatment longer than patients in control groups do.

Specific research on relapse prevention strategies has focused on GABA-enhancing drugs that inhibit cocaine reinforcement by secondarily blocking the dopamine surge characteristic of cocaine intoxication. In addition to vigabatrin, discussed in the previous post, topiramate is another particularly well-suited candidate for relapse prevention. Known as Topamax, and prescribed for seizures and migraines, the drug has shown early promise: “In a 13-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial of topiramate involving 40 cocaine-dependent patients…. more of those on topiramate achieved at least 3 weeks of continuous abstinence (59 vs. 26 percent).”

Surprisingly, the granddaddy of all anti-addiction drugs–Antabuse–has made a comeback as a subject of study for cocaine addiction, even though it has never been spectacularly effective in its original application as a relapse prevention drug for alcoholics. Disulfiram, as it is known chemically, causes unpleasant physical sensations, including vomiting, when combined with even small amounts of alcohol. It does so by inhibiting the enzymes responsible for degrading alcohol. Even a little becomes too much. In similar fashion, disulfiram retards the breakdown of cocaine, leading to extremely high levels that induce paranoia and anxiety rather than a pleasurable, if extreme, high. At least four published trials have demonstrated reduced cocaine use in disulfiram-treated patients, according to Kampman’s paper . One important downside to using Antabuse for cocaine addiction is that serious complications might occur if alcohol is added to the mix.

Finally, and still well into the future, is the prospect of relapse prevention therapy by means of a vaccine–an entirely different mechanism of approach. Research has shown that it is possible to produce “cocaine-specific antibodies that bind to cocaine molecules and prevent them from crossing the blood-brain barrier, thereby blunting the drug’s euphoric and reinforcing effects,” Kampman’s paper asserts. A vaccine called TA-CD has tested well in preliminary studies.

I was present the first time my two best friends tried cocaine. They encouraged me to participate in their experimentation – I refused – but quietly observed their reactions to the drugs supposed “euphoric” effects. The following weekend, the same scenario presented itself; again, I refused and noticed how eager they were to partake in the drug again. Something about their level of anxiousness was unsettling; almost as if they were being driven to the drug by strange, unseen forces beyond their control. Control? Oh, yes, of course my friends proclaimed that they were in complete control of the drug – they would never become addicted!

With each passing weekend, my friends appeared to be increasingly eager to begin the night earlier and stay out later. I began to notice how much money they were expending to acquire the drugs and the increased level of alcohol consumption that appeared to compliment their cocaine habit – yes – a habit was forming. Of course, I tried to bring my observations to their attention, but my pleas were met with strong resistance. “I am in control!” they proclaimed. It was clear to me (observing from outside their cocaine-hazed weekends), that they were losing control rapidly.

The level of desire or craving my buddies had to obtain and consume cocaine was somewhat analogous to a small child desiring a piece of candy or a cookie – they just couldn’t wait to get their hands on the cocaine. Their “only on the weekends” credo was somehow abandoned along the way. Now, weeknights seemed suitable for a little cocaine binge. Again, I tried to convince them of their rapidly-forming cocaine addiction and once again, I was met with even stronger resistance. “I didn’t know what I was talking about,” they proclaimed. ‘Strange,’ I thought to myself, as I was not the one throwing, hundreds of dollars and thousands of brain cells down the drain every few days. What used to be fun social times spent together with my friends, had diminished to waiting by myself in a car, while they went into their suppliers house to buy their drugs. Needless to say, that wasn’t my idea of enjoyment. It seemed as if their entire demeanor and priorities had changed; my friends were being transformed from intelligent, respectable and responsible individuals, into tunnel-visioned maniacs who cared about nothing other than the “high” they would derive from the next line of cocaine. It was clear at this point that they had serious cocaine abuse issues and helping them was beyond my control or abilities.

During the course of the next 18 months; one of my buddies, proceeded to spend every dime he had on cocaine use. He literally spent tens of thousands of dollars on the drug and sold most possessions he had to supplement his cocaine habit. We no longer rode mountain bikes or worked on our race car projects after work or on the weekends; rather, I could find him sleeping in a dark-cave-of-a-room in the middle of a beautiful day – having been up for two days straight doing cocaine and drinking, I suppose it was lucky he was just sleeping and not dead. He also lost his relationship during this course of time. He was really struggling, yet he still had enough perceptive ability remaining to allow him to try and rally above cocaine’s evil grip. At this time, he had the good fortune to be found by a beautiful woman, where he found inspiration and hope. They were married and now have children. To this day, he still struggles with the cocaine addiction days of yore. And, although he doesn’t consume the drug any longer – he tells me the craving remains – like a bad dream.

My other friend, a third degree black belt in martial arts and weight lifting partner of 10 years, no longer showed-up at the gym or at his karate master’s dojo. He now lied to everyone he knew, family, finance and friends. He had also wasted thousands of dollars on cocaine and alcohol. He too, lost his relationship and self-respect. I suppose he finally hit rock-bottom one day when he called me in tears, proclaiming, “I need help.” Shortly after that, he distanced himself from both myself and any remaining friends he had. We haven’t spoken in 5 years now – I hope he found himself. Unfortunately, our friendship appears to be forever lost.

I felt compelled to share this story with anyone who has ever considered experimenting with cocaine. Let this story serve as warning and as confirmation that the words, “I can control it,” couldn’t be further from the truth. Cocaine use destroys relationships, jobs and lives. Don’t be fooled by those who try to convince you otherwise! Cocaine is a powerful and dangerous drug. Maybe you can save yourself from going through the living hell my best friends experienced by simply doing what I did – just say ‘No!’

Cocaine is a stimulant of the central nervous system and an appetite suppressant, which is obtained from the leaves of the coca plant. Cocaine readily passes into the brain when ingested into the body. In the brain, causing a buildup of dopamine, which high levels in continuously stimulates nerve cells, causing the euphoria, or the ‘high’ we hear about.

Even though it is considered illegal by possession, cultivation, and distribution of cocaine for non-medicinal and non-government sanctioned purposes in virtually all parts of the world, it is one of the most freely commercialized products in the world. Ever since its discovery, it has destroyed many lives all through history due to its addictive properties.

The use of Cocaine is a cancer that is prevalent across all socioeconomic strata and is no respecter of age, demographics, economic, social, political, religious, and livelihood.

Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine is the world’s most powerful stimulant of natural origin known to man. In the form of fine white powder, it sold on the streets. Cocaine can be absorbed, inhaled, injected, sniffed or taken orally.

The powdery type being one of the two primary forms of cocaine, is used for snorting up the nose. The second is freebase, better known as crack cocaine, used for smoking.

No matter the form or type of cocaine you take, addiction is swift to follow and dependency evolves in less than 2 weeks. Did you ever imagine that a habit you started casually, maybe to fit in with your peers or maybe due to stress would make end by you being so totally addicted and in danger of losing your life? No mercy is shown by this addiction and is swift to act.

As it lacks the physical withdrawal symptoms seen in alcohol or heroin addiction, addicts like to believe that cocaine is not addictive. Cocaine has powerful psychological addictive properties. Cocaine is addictive, no matter which ever way you put it, “If it is not addictive, then why can’t the user stop using?”

Methods of Cocaine Abuse
People should be aware that Cocaine is presently the most abused major stimulant in the world and has become the drug most frequently involved in emergency department visits. It is not a new drug of abuse but has come to be termed the caviar of recreational drugs.

Addiction, severe health problems and death are lead to cocaine abuse. In failed attempts to recreate the pleasurable sensations of their first exposure to cocaine, abusers are trapped in a vicious cycle of increased cocaine abuse. The intensity and duration of cocaine’s effects, which include increased energy, reduced fatigue, and mental alertness, depend on the route of drug administration commonly used for cocaine: snorting, injecting, and smoking. Snorting is the process of inhaling cocaine powder through the nose, where it is absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal tissues. Injecting is the use of a needle to release the drug directly into the bloodstream. Smoking involves inhaling cocaine vapor or smoke into the lungs, where absorption into the bloodstream is as rapid as by injection. Other severe problems and addiction are lead by using these methods.

Health Risks from Cocaine Abuse and Addiction

Different adverse effects are produced by different methods of cocaine abuse -make no mistake – they are severe and life-threatening.
” Snorters loose their sense of smell, suffer nosebleeds, have problems with swallowing, hoarseness, and a chronically runny nose.
” Ingesters suffer severe bowel gangrene as a result of reduced blood flow. Injecters bring about severe allergic reactions and run increased risk for contracting HIV and other blood-borne diseases.
” Bingers lay themselves open to irritability, restlessness, anxiety, and paranoia.

What we should realize is that prolonged Cocaine abuse may lead to a temporary state of full-blown paranoid psychosis, wherein the abuser loses touch with reality.

Regardless of the method or frequency of cocaine abuse, you should know that you are only hastening your own end. Each one of us should have a sense of purpose in our lives to enable us to avoid the lure of Cocaine.

In our troubled world today, many have looked high and low searching for a source of happiness and those who’ve looked in all the wrong places have landed in painful places. Individuals who try crack or cocaine and then get addicted to it may seem happy due to the high feeling they get off the drug but actually, they are indeed the most troubled of all individuals. The harsh reality of cocaine addiction is that it affects you physically, emotionally and mentally as well.

First, you would find that addicts would suffer financially as they would max up their credit cards and spend all their money on crack instead of settling bills and saving for the future. On top of that, some even use up their welfare cash and finish their savings along with their families on this abused drug. As some fall into bankruptcy and can’t find another source of financial aid to fund their cravings for a quick fix, they stoop down to the lowest level and start to rob stores and houses as well. When this occurs, not only does the addict suffer, they ruin the lives of their children and loved ones as well.

Furthermore, crack addition affects your physical self as well. As that high feeling ware off, the harmful substances left in your body can cause mild to severe conditions. It s your judgments, causes bronchitis, lung cancer, respiratory problems, weight loss, slowed digestion, increased blood pressure, brain seizures and so much more. In emotional and psychological term, you would find that addicts would become easily depressed, they would be terribly paranoid and in more severe cases hallucination occurs.

In conclusion, no one chooses to become an addict, but when you realize someone is in trouble, be the helping hand and reach out because you could be saving a life.

ADDICTION is a disease. Yes, all the world authorities are unanimously together on this conclusion after all the scientific evidences that it is a disease that affects human mind in such a way that it leads to an irresistible compulsion to perform certain behavior. It may be the use of alcohol, any drug like Hash, Heroin, Tranquillizers, Cocaine or at times just a behavior, like gambling, excessive and uncontrolled use of mobile phone or internet, love or sex addiction or even something considered a virtue like work holism or religious extremism.

The journey from first use of a drug or a behavior to becoming a slave to this disease is not traveled in days or months; rather, it takes years at times before a person gets so much involved in it that his whole life starts revolving around this particular drug or behavior. His life becomes unmanageable. Compulsion to use the drug or perform the behavior is the hallmark of addiction. Loss of control over the behavior is the cornerstone.

Pity is that while the person who suffers from the disease of addiction is slowly but progressively getting more and more entrenched in it, the family, the loved ones who by all means and intentions want to help the person, find themselves helpless to save him from the eventual calamity. Their behaviors keep varying. At times, they don’t have even the faintest of idea what has been going wrong with their loved one since many years because he had succeeded in keeping all his drug related activities secret from the family.

Family may be in a state of denial, not even expecting something as grave as the disease of addiction afflicting their loved one. Sometimes they are doing certain acts which they intend to help the person and stop the progression of the disease but fact they help in making the disease of addiction more and more serious. These acts are known as enabling behaviors. At times, family and loved ones just act as silent onlookers, being at loss to understand what to do while watching their loved one gradually being engulfed by the quagmire of addiction.

The good news is that the loved one, person who falls a victim of the disease can be helped. Yes, help is available at every stage, whether it’s just an occasional exposure, a habit, a compulsion or ever a late stage when the disease has physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually overpowered the person.

The only thing required is to ACT! Not to sit silent or idle spectator. Get help before its too late. The earlier, the better, don’t wait till things start slipping away. If you notice even few suspicious signs or symptoms of addictive behaviors in your loved one, don’t just sit but come to us because help is available. Your problem can be solved at every stage.

Only one person with sane mind is required to initiate the action. Let that sane person be you. Your loved one will not seek help himself because his mind is intoxicated. He is under the spells of diseases which has denied him from rational thinking and foresee the consequences of his acts. He is looking towards the immediate pleasure, not the long term disaster.

Nowadays young boys and girls are prone towards the very dangerous addiction that is of Drugs and alcohol. We feel very badly for our loved ones when we find them in utter distress due to these bad astringents. It becomes unbearable on our part to undergo such pain when we find our very own ones into great trouble. In the long run of life it so happens that our loved ones excel so masterfully in this not so good act that we as family and friends are unable to handle their lives and inconclusively what happens is that we one day get the news of their ultimate tragic demise. Drug and alcohol addiction are the major causes of the teenagers being so outrageous and loud. The percentage of people addicted to drugs and alcohol has been growing at a very faster rate all over the world. There are various kinds of people who are getting addicted to different types of drugs every moment of time. The worst hit section of the society is that of the Teenagers or in other words the youngsters.

When a person gets addicted to drugs it has a lot of effects on his mind and body both. There are drugs namely heroin and cocaine which have an everlasting impact on the brains of an individual, making him very much dependent as well as they have such dangerous results that the person who is once affected by them suffers from acute need of another dose of drugs whenever needed. If not treated under the correct span of time, the addict may suffer acute pain and can also lose his attention in life. Contrary to this alcohol also has some adverse effects on an individual though the effects are a minor one. These can become major if the dose of alcohol increases and if the treatment is not done within the limited span of time. It can cause incurable diseases like liver jaundice and the failure of most important body parts like the kidneys and the heart.

Conversely, the treatment of drug addiction is a very hectic task and it needs a lot of care as well as plans which can only be provided from a drug and alcohol rehab centre. Everybody wants to save his loved one from the very major negative results of drug and alcohol and so a lot of planning is required for the treatment of this addiction. The best way is getting together and planning a Drug Intervention as well as an Alcohol Intervention for the security of your loved one. This intervention will help him getting rid of this treacherous habit and he will much relieved. It sometimes happens that the users do not like to get treated in such a manner but before getting them treated it is very necessary for them to understand that they will not prosper in achieving those things which they value if they are not in the mood of getting the correct care and treatment.

Sometimes the addicts have to pay a great price for the treatment that they have to undergo. Intervention Services are available in almost all the nook and corner of the country due to the excess amount of people who are getting addicted to drug and alcohol. An intervention consists of a team which looks after whole process of the intervention. This is followed by some meetings within the team members and then the final confrontation with the addict about the problem. Once the addict is comfortable with the problem and gives in the final process can start without any further obstacles with the intervention specialist giving their undying and adept service for the sake of saving the life of an individual.

For the best alcohol intervention and drug intervention the best thing that can be done is to seek the aid of an Intervention Specialist where you can get the best guidance and appropriate treatment of addiction problems.

A drug addiction is strongly desiring to take a drug that makes you feel good. For example, snorting cocaine makes you energetic, alert, euphoric, with increased mental clarity. Once you’re addicted to a drug, abstaining from it becomes a nightmare. For example, abstaining from cocaine can cause agitation, depression, extreme fatigue, anxiety, angry outbursts, lack of motivation, vomiting, shaking, irritability, muscle pain, and disturbed sleep.

Thorndike’s Law of Effect

Simply put, what keeps you addicted is that taking the drug makes you feel good, and avoiding it makes you feel awful. This coincides with Thorndike’s Law of Effect: If a reward follows a particular behavior, that behavior probably will be repeated; if a punishment follows a particular behavior, that behavior probably won’t be repeated.

For example, feeling good is your reward for snorting cocaine; feeling awful is your punishment for avoiding cocaine. So what are you going to do? This is why it’s so difficult to abstain from an addiction.

You have a drug addiction and can’t quit. Now what? Don’t despair; there’s a way out. The trick is seeing your addiction differently – seeing it for what it really is.

Unemployable, Lonely, and Sick

Though taking your drug makes you feel good immediately, it makes you feel awful in the long run. For example, snorting cocaine will eventually cause health problems such as heart disease, heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, seizures, gastrointestinal problems, convulsions, nausea, blurred vision, chest pain, fever, muscle spasms, and coma. If you think that these health problems are bad, long-term cocaine snorting causes social problems such as lying, stealing, absenteeism at work, and sometimes even prostitution.

So basically, long-term cocaine use causes you unemployment due to your work absenteeism, loss of friends and family due to your lying and stealing, and sickness due to cocaine’s damaging effects on your body. Cocaine ultimately transforms you into a loser – unemployable, lonely, and sick!

Other popular recreational drugs such as crack, heroin, crystal meth, Vicodin, ecstasy, and OxyContin also ultimately transform you into a loser – unemployable, lonely, and sick!

Thorndike’s Law of Effect Revisited

Now let’s revisit Thorndike’s Law of Effect: If a reward follows a particular behavior, that behavior probably will be repeated; if a punishment follows a particular behavior, that behavior probably won’t be repeated.

Being unemployable, lonely, and sick is your punishment for taking your desired drug over time; being employed, loved, and healthy is your reward for avoiding your desired drug over time. So what are you going to do?

Classical Conditioning

Wait a minute! Reading this article won’t help you! Once done reading, you’ll go back to snorting cocaine, smoking crack, shooting heroin, popping OxyContin, or whatever it is you do.

That’s why I’m introducing a powerfully effective self-help intervention that you must do regularly. This self-help intervention is called Classical Conditioning. Simply put, Classical Conditioning consists of pairing a particular feeling with a particular event over and over again until they become automatically associated with each other.

Let’s say that you have a cocaine addiction and want to quit. So instead of feeling good after snorting cocaine, you want to feel awful. What makes you feel awful? Electric shock? Okay, we’ll use this.

So each time you snort cocaine, you give yourself a severe electric shock. You feel awful each time. Eventually, you’ll automatically associate snorting cocaine with feeling awful – without the electric shock! Thus, curing yourself of cocaine addiction.

Nevertheless, electrically shocking yourself isn’t socially acceptable and will attract unwanted attention. We need something more discreet. What’s more discreet than the hidden thoughts inside your head? Can you use your thoughts to make yourself feel awful? Let’s see.

You just snorted cocaine and want to make yourself feel awful for doing it. So you think, “By using cocaine, I’m making myself into a complete loser. I’m now becoming totally unemployable, lonely, and sick. Worthless. Useless. A hopeless piece of crap. Good for nothing.” How do you feel? Awful, right?

So if you think along these lines each time you snort cocaine, you’ll eventually learn to associate snorting cocaine with feeling awful – without using your thoughts to make yourself feel awful! Thus, curing yourself of cocaine addiction.

Points to Ponder

This article is tailored to those addicted to hard drugs such as cocaine, crack, heroin, crystal meth, Vicodin, ecstasy, and OxyContin. Nevertheless, the intervention discussed here can be used, with some minor adjustments, to overcome addictions to the softer drugs.

For example, smoking cigarettes doesn’t necessarily cause unemployment or loneliness. But it does cause health problems such as emphysema, heart disease, stroke, cancer, birth defects, green teeth, and spider veins. So rather than thinking of yourself as becoming unemployable, lonely, and sick each time you smoke a cigarette, you just simply think of yourself as becoming sick.

Conclusion

In the past, drug addiction was seen as an overpowering and unmanageable disease. And the addict, using his own willpower, was seen as powerless against this disease. Therefore the addict was encouraged to join a support group that might lead him to a spiritual awakening.

Currently, drug addiction is seen as self-destructive behavior maintained by the reward of taking a drug (feeling good) and the punishment of abstaining from it (withdrawal symptoms). Given this, a scientific intervention such as Classical Conditioning can effectively cure it.

Though I’m scientifically inclined, I do believe in the power of prayer; since I’ve seen it work in my own life. So by all means, pray to be free from your addiction; then go forth and free yourself with Classical Conditioning.
