To help a drug addict, any addiction counselor can tell you, the first hurdle is to get the addict’s agreement to receive help. No amounts of advice or friendly mannerisms are going to make a difference if there is no willingness to quit drugs.

This can be difficult; it often is, but definitely not hopeless. This is called intervention and can be the most difficult part of their recovery from addiction. The good news is this, there are things you can do or say to bring them to the realization that help is needed. Here are some very important points to keep in mind:

They must see a good enough reason to quit.

Drug intervention is a very delicate process. It is important to remember that the drug addicted person is not fully aware of their condition. Their assessment of their own condition is almost always much rosier than what people around them perceive. Abusing drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, alcohol, methamphetamine, or even pot leaves users with lowered self-awareness while leading them to believe they are in full control. For this reason they seldom take their own addiction as seriously as do loved ones. It is imperative that they be helped to see the damages drugs are doing to them and others.

It may seem incredible that they are not aware of these effects, but that is an aspect of addiction.

You must keep your cool.

When emotions flair, the thought processes dwindle. There will likely be more than enough emotional baggage and turmoil while you’re talking to the addicted person. Make sure that you are not adding to it. If you remain calm and stick to your plan of action without being pulled off into some blind alley, you can keep the discussion on track.

If you choose to have some other family members or loved ones present during your intervention, realize that they may not be able to keep their emotions in check. Whatever-just make sure that you are in control and staying calm. Your composure will act as a point of stability which will help everyone focus.

Keep the attention on the future.

Going through drug withdrawal and rehabilitation is not an easy process. For the addict, the mere prospect might be terrifying. It is, however, necessary.

So the attention must be on the purpose of that process, the goal of treatment, namely, a repaired, capable and able individual who no longer uses or needs drugs to function. This is, after all, what the addict and all those who care enough to help him or her through this process are after-rehabilitation from the destruction of drug abuse and addiction.

Get the addict into treatment. Now.

You should have the addiction treatment center chosen and ready. People on drugs are not stable and can change their minds completely in a matter of hours, so once the user is ready to accept help, don’t waste any time. Have things ready to go and even the flight booked if possible. Get them into a good center now and let the rehabilitation process begin.

Getting off of heroin isn’t really as drastic as it might seem to the heroin addict or even to the Paraprofessionals that are involved in helping the addict to get clean. Substituting a drug that can replace the heroin in the addict’s bloodstream is the usual course when detox is done to keep the addict off of heroin. Basically, the problem is that an addict’s options are not all that impressive. Incarcerating the heroin addict and keeping him or her locked up for six months is one option. An addict can willingly go into a live in center and follow their procedures if he or she is willing to give up the drug on his own. That is another option.

The interesting part of the mentality of heroin addicts is their feeling of superiority as compared to other addicts. In their discussions one gets the impression that their addiction is usually found only in mentally advanced addicts as compared to say cocaine. The real significance in the addict’s exaggerated appraisal of himself which to a normal person sounds bizarre is that the drug itself is superimposing it’s continued existence in the host body by controlling and influencing the heroin addict’s thought processes. Heroin becomes almost like a living entity that controls the mind of the host body to continue its life.

As absurd as that might sound, the fact is that using the addict’s altered state of conscience is another option. Talk therapy done while detox is going on also helps to keep the addict of the drug without the reliance of a chemically produced substitute used as to keep the addict from relapse. Weaning an addict off heroin doesn’t really work as reduced hits do not keep the addict controlled and his behavior could be dangerous. Basically, heroin detox options are limited to keeping the addict in a controlled environment until the need for heroin no longer causes disturbed behavior in the addict.

For the best results of heroin detox it is recommend that the addict go to some type of long term drug rehabilitation center. These programs are generally require a 6 month to 2 year commitment. The person will be required to live at the rehab during this time. Most places require the addict to work to pay for there their rent. This is great because most addicts do not have very strong work ethics. They also will be required to attend 12 step meetings daily and group therapy.

Good luck

The number one beneficial aid to cocaine treatment and also for staying off of the habit is a simple step you can and must do for yourself. The old adage, “birds of a feather flock together” goes very well with this scenario of cocaine treatment. Those which you are around will influence what you do!

When you look back at the reason and the surroundings in which got you started down the road to a cocaine addiction, you have to admit that the people you were with probably had a great effect on your getting started. The surroundings in which you put yourself played a great part in getting hooked and also in staying hooked. To get off and stay off, you must choose well your surroundings and the people with which you hang out with.

The people which you were accustomed to hanging out with probably did drugs too. And the surroundings in which you hung out probably was conductive to your habit also. Just think about people who you are around often, if they have a positive outlook then that rubs off on you. If they have the negative kind of outlook and are often grumbling and complaining, then you also pick up that negativity. The same applies to getting off cocaine, if you are in a positive and productive atmosphere it will be conductive to your staying off cocaine.

There is an old saying “resist temptation” and the key to resisting temptation is to not be around it! If you do not put yourself in the tempting position it is easier to resist. And if however, you put yourself in a tempting situation (like where others are doing it) then it is naturally harder to resist. If you keep yourself in a supportive atmosphere and with others who can and will give you support, then it is much easier to resist the temptation of picking the habit back up again.

The number one beneficial aid to staying clean from a cocaine habit is staying away from the drug scene, and the people who associate with it. Changing your group of friends sometimes can be hard to do. But it will be the most positive step you can do to isolate yourself from the temptation.

A new group of positive and supportive friends can and will be the best measure you can take towards staying clean. When you end up in jail with a drug charge, you will not get to pick your friends – and you will wish you had done a better job of picking friends while you had the chance.

Is cocaine addiction a possibility in a loved one’s or your own life? Cocaine use can be an extremely difficult thing to handle and if you have become involved in its use, it can be a hard thing to know if the line between casual use and addiction to cocaine is being crossed. No matter what the reason, it is important for you to understands the risks and dangers of cocaine addiction.

Addiction is often defined as the need to frequently use increased doses of the drug, despite the physical and psychological harm that it does. The compulsion to use the drug is so strong that the addict will commonly give up their personal relationships and their value system in order to support it.

There are many factors which might influence a person to become addicted to cocaine. First, cocaine is a chemical that is easy to become addicted to; like any other stimulant, it affects the neurochemistry of the brain. Second, some people are more prone to become addicted than others. If one or both of your parents was particularly susceptible to cocaine, there is an increased likelihood that you are susceptible as well. Third, cocaine is a drug to which the human body can build up a tolerance. When this tolerance occurs, an increased amount of the drug is necessary to create a similar sort of high.

Cocaine is an extremely addictive drug. As a stimulant, it inhibits the absorption of dopamine into the body’s system, creating a powerful, prolonged high. Because many users develop a resistance to it fairly quickly, they never achieve the same that they got from it originally, resulting in them taking larger and larger dosages to try to achieve the same effect. One of the symptoms of cocaine addiction is a constant increase in the amount ingested.

Addiction is also likely when withdrawal symptoms are seen when the drug is taken away or reduced. Being physically sick or depressed are both signs that the person might have become addicted. In terms of physical effects, nausea, a runny nose and constant twitching are signs of withdrawal, and in terms of psychological effects, depression, anxiety and agitation can be indication of a withdrawal in full progress.

Cocaine can result in cardiovascular disruptions and respiratory issues. Neurological problems like strokes, seizures, and migraines can also result from cocaine use. The issues that result from cocaine use alone are severe, but with addiction, can become even worse. Even the method of taking can become dangerous. Ingesting it orally can result in bowel gangrene and injection can lead to a variety of blood-borne diseases and complications.

If you suspect that you or someone you love might be in danger of cocaine addiction, understand that you are not alone. Thousands of people come to this realization every year, and start the journey to recovery.

Cocaine is a powerful stimulant with highly addictive properties that effect the brain directly. Cocaine is usually found in a white, crystalline powder, known as coke, blow, snow and other street names. When purchased on the street you are usually getting a substance that has been diluted with other powders such as cornstarch, talcum powder, sugar or other addictive substances such as amphetamines. Cocaine can be snorted via the nose, smoke or injected. Users who inject the drug have a heightened risk of contracting the disease HIV or Aids.

Cocaine usually effects an individual within minutes of using the drug and can last anywhere from minutes to a few hours. Taking in small amounts, the user will have a feeling of euphoria, energy, alertness, and make the user become very talkative, however the prolonged use of cocaine can lead to a dependence on cocaine to feel any type of happiness at all. The drug temporarily diminishes the users need for sleep or food. While coming down off of the drug, users claim feelings of anxiety, restlessness, irritability and paranoia. Users always need to keep increasing their dose in order to obtain the same high they used to experience when they first began using. The long term effects of cocaine use include, addiction, irritability, mood disturbances, restlessness, paranoia, heart problems, respiratory failure, strokes, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea and auditory hallucinations.

If you think someone close to you may be having a problem with cocaine addiction, look for warning signs, such as weight loss, loss of interest in daily activities, track marks on the forearms (for intravenous users), red blood shot eyes, runny nose or frequent sniffing, change in sleeping patterns, changes in behavior, change of friends, becoming depressed, losing interest in personal appearance or in frequent need of money. It is not uncommon for a user to become addicted after their first time using the drug, and often this leads to the use and mixture of other drugs such as heroin, amphetamines and hallucinogens.

Treatment for cocaine addiction varies on the needs of the individual addicted. Some treatments include going to rehab, having an addictions counselor, behavioral therapy, and self awareness groups. Remember that it is very hard to treat this major addiction without the help of trained professionals. If you or someone you know is addicted to cocaine, don’t try to treat your addiction yourself – go to your doctor or local addictions center and get professional help.

I was present the first time my two best friends tried cocaine. They encouraged me to participate in their experimentation – I refused – but quietly observed their reactions to the drugs supposed “euphoric” effects. The following weekend, the same scenario presented itself; again, I refused and noticed how eager they were to partake in the drug again. Something about their level of anxiousness was unsettling; almost as if they were being driven to the drug by strange, unseen forces beyond their control. Control? Oh, yes, of course my friends proclaimed that they were in complete control of the drug – they would never become addicted!

With each passing weekend, my friends appeared to be increasingly eager to begin the night earlier and stay out later. I began to notice how much money they were expending to acquire the drugs and the increased level of alcohol consumption that appeared to compliment their cocaine habit – yes – a habit was forming. Of course, I tried to bring my observations to their attention, but my pleas were met with strong resistance. “I am in control!” they proclaimed. It was clear to me (observing from outside their cocaine-hazed weekends), that they were losing control rapidly.

The level of desire or craving my buddies had to obtain and consume cocaine was somewhat analogous to a small child desiring a piece of candy or a cookie – they just couldn’t wait to get their hands on the cocaine. Their “only on the weekends” credo was somehow abandoned along the way. Now, weeknights seemed suitable for a little cocaine binge. Again, I tried to convince them of their rapidly-forming cocaine addiction and once again, I was met with even stronger resistance. “I didn’t know what I was talking about,” they proclaimed. ‘Strange,’ I thought to myself, as I was not the one throwing, hundreds of dollars and thousands of brain cells down the drain every few days. What used to be fun social times spent together with my friends, had diminished to waiting by myself in a car, while they went into their suppliers house to buy their drugs. Needless to say, that wasn’t my idea of enjoyment. It seemed as if their entire demeanor and priorities had changed; my friends were being transformed from intelligent, respectable and responsible individuals, into tunnel-visioned maniacs who cared about nothing other than the “high” they would derive from the next line of cocaine. It was clear at this point that they had serious cocaine abuse issues and helping them was beyond my control or abilities.

During the course of the next 18 months; one of my buddies, proceeded to spend every dime he had on cocaine use. He literally spent tens of thousands of dollars on the drug and sold most possessions he had to supplement his cocaine habit. We no longer rode mountain bikes or worked on our race car projects after work or on the weekends; rather, I could find him sleeping in a dark-cave-of-a-room in the middle of a beautiful day – having been up for two days straight doing cocaine and drinking, I suppose it was lucky he was just sleeping and not dead. He also lost his relationship during this course of time. He was really struggling, yet he still had enough perceptive ability remaining to allow him to try and rally above cocaine’s evil grip. At this time, he had the good fortune to be found by a beautiful woman, where he found inspiration and hope. They were married and now have children. To this day, he still struggles with the cocaine addiction days of yore. And, although he doesn’t consume the drug any longer – he tells me the craving remains – like a bad dream.

My other friend, a third degree black belt in martial arts and weight lifting partner of 10 years, no longer showed-up at the gym or at his karate master’s dojo. He now lied to everyone he knew, family, finance and friends. He had also wasted thousands of dollars on cocaine and alcohol. He too, lost his relationship and self-respect. I suppose he finally hit rock-bottom one day when he called me in tears, proclaiming, “I need help.” Shortly after that, he distanced himself from both myself and any remaining friends he had. We haven’t spoken in 5 years now – I hope he found himself. Unfortunately, our friendship appears to be forever lost.

I felt compelled to share this story with anyone who has ever considered experimenting with cocaine. Let this story serve as warning and as confirmation that the words, “I can control it,” couldn’t be further from the truth. Cocaine use destroys relationships, jobs and lives. Don’t be fooled by those who try to convince you otherwise! Cocaine is a powerful and dangerous drug. Maybe you can save yourself from going through the living hell my best friends experienced by simply doing what I did – just say ‘No!’

Recently, the police in Scotland discovered some amount of crystal meth. This substance is said to be the most addictive stuff in the world. The Scottish authorities are making effort to stop the meth epidemic, which is believed to be behind the violence experienced in some communities and families around Europe, Australia and US. It has destroyed or incapacitated so many people and has put the drug rehab and detox facilities under pressure.

In spite of the publicity against its use, the Scottish police discovered the substance in such a large quantity that surprised the authorities. The discovery of a large amount of the substance somewhere in Lerwick, Shetland was a poof of its presence in the country. This has now alerted the authorities that meth crystal availability if not checked will soon become an epidemic. Action is being taken to curtail the activities of youths who are engaged in home-grown cannabis.

Crystal meth is known in the street as ‘ice’. It is more addictive than cocaine. Its effect causes psychosis, a kind of mind-scrambling effect that propels the abusers into lack of self control. If you use it for a long time, your immune system begins to weaken leading to several devastating health conditions and eventual death.

If you are an abuser of this substance and you want to recover your physical and mental conditions, you will need a devoted and special drug rehabilitation therapy. You will also need a well planned and monitored diet including food supplements.

Some of the effects of this substance are impaired judgment, lack of co-ordination, impaired reflexes, heart palpitations, distorted vision, total insomnia as well as damage to the brain, lungs and liver. Crystal meth abusers are sadistic, unhappy, and self-destructive and suffer mental illness and delusion.

This substance also creates the presence of ants and other creeping insects on the skin of abusers causing severe sores from scratching of the skin. It also results in weight loss, profuse sweating and rapid tooth loss.

Dear friend, I am very sure you now understand that it is not easy to recover from crystal meth addiction using the normal drug rehab programs. Nevertheless, abusers of this substance can be rehabilitated in special rehab facilities. The government is seeing to this, so take advantage of it now.

This notorious white powder that cocaine is, has its origins in leaves derived from the South American coca plant. Leaves that were being freely used by the Mayans for their stimulating qualities became known to Europe following Spain’s conquest of that continent.

Described as a stimulant, cocaine can be ingested in many ways, be it smoking, injection into the veins, or what is called snorting via the nose. No matter how it is consumed, its effects of this highly addictive drug are the same. However, it is known that no fewer than 90 percent of the people who use it do so occasionally; it is only the remaining 10 percent that are known to be addicts, or those who use it at a frequency that is equal to or exceeds once a week.

Effects of cocaine addiction: In the short run, the effects a cocaine addict feels on the body are unreasonable irritability, excitability to the extreme, uncontrollable restlessness and difficulty in sleeping. In the next state, the cocaine addict experiences fretfulness, anxiety even when there is no reason for it and importantly, delusions in the sensory perceptions and a feeling that insects crawl on the surface of the skin.

The physical manifestations of these effects a cocaine addict experiences are increased heart rate and blood pressure, fast breathing and enlarged reactive pupils.

Symptoms of cocaine withdrawal: When a cocaine addict attempts withdrawal from the use of the drug, the immediate signs that are seen are paranoia, confusion, impulsiveness, hallucinations, hyperactivity and agitation. The physical symptoms of cocaine withdrawal may include nausea, abdominal cramps, fever, diarrhea, exhaustion and chills. Insomnia, ennui, disorientation, depression, muscle pains and irresistible craving for cocaine are the other effects a cocaine addict feels once he tries to attempt cocaine detoxification.

Cocaine addiction treatment programs: The ultimate goal of cocaine addiction treatment programs is abstinence, or weaning the cocaine addict from the drug. It is interesting to note that cocaine rehabs administer cocaine addiction treatment programs only when the drug use starts interfering in day-to-day activities, such as broken marriage, harm to children, absenteeism from work, reduced efficiency at work or job loss.

The first step at cocaine rehab is to cleanse the body of the toxins overuse of the drug has brought into the system. This may take anywhere between four and ten months after intervention by a cocaine detox center. The actual treatment commences once the body mechanism and chemicals come back to normal.

This is followed by cocaine addiction treatment programs that lessen the craving. Drugs such as dopamine show good effect in helping the cocaine addict have a reduced feeling of longing. Acupuncture is also a proven method in this step.

Finally, cocaine rehab centers include counseling, family therapy, psychotherapy, education about drug abuse and addiction, acupuncture, and relaxation training as part of the treatment. These may or may not require hospitalization, and is individual-specific.

Some programs like Employee Assistance Programs and Cocaine Anonymous are also undertaken. Under the former, employers take measures that bring back the cocaine-addicted employee back to the mainstream, once the management has taken note of cocaine addictions in the workplace. Rehab centers such as Cocaine Anonymous offer cocaine addiction treatment, but are majorly inclined towards counseling.

The thing that makes these drugs so dangerous as opposed to cocaine or heroine is the fact that these drugs are prescribed by a doctor. Now don’t make the mistake and point the finger at the doctor as many of these drugs are medical miracles and truly do help people cope with chronic pain and other ailments. The problem is that the nature of these drugs are very addictive in nature and without proper monitoring of ones self you can change from becoming dependent on the drugs to being completely addicted to them.

Addiction is easy because the doctor may raise your dosage to help you cope with your illness. Well if you raise the dosage you will feel greater withdrawal symptoms in between dosages and end up taking pills in between dosage times just to cope. These extra dosages grow and grow until you have to be on these pills all the time. Well at this point your body builds up a tolerance to the drug and you start taking more.

At this time you are becoming addicted. Addicts will do anything they have to in order to get more pills to break the tolerance point to help them feel better. The sad thing is that people that would never act a certain way act in crazy ways when they are completely addicted to the prescription drugs. Some addicts get friends and family to get pills for them, they forge prescription slips and all kinds of other things to get a hold of the drug they feel will make them feel better.

I just recently found out that one of my good friends has recently relapsed and is once again on hard drugs. Let me first help you understand where this man came from and how he has ended up in the state he is today.

My friend many years ago got into very heavy drugs like cocaine and heroine by hanging with bad friends. He had 2 children and got married when he was pretty young. While his kids were very young his wife had to kick him out of their home because he was shooting up at home and was just totally out of it. Luckily his children were too young to remember any of this.

One day at work he overdosed on heroine. He was found in the bathroom stall by a fellow employee and his heart had stopped. After being rushed to the hospital and defeating all odds, he made it through the overdose.

After this experience he decided not to do drugs again and cleaned up his life. He got the rare second chance of remarrying his wife, getting his kids back, and they bought and moved into a new home. He has been clean for several years. His recover story was inspiring to all in the community as he was heavily active in community functions.

Well i just found out that this man has once again been kicked out of the house and is back on drugs all of a sudden? How does this kind of thing happen? Addiction is a constant temptation that never goes away for hard drug addicts. Just like our temptation to need a drink of water, or chocolate, a heavy recovering addict has these urges for the types of drugs they used to be on. In this man’s case he hurt his hand and was prescribed pain pills. Well taking a few too many led him right back on the road to getting heavy drugs. The sad thing is that now his kids are much older and understand what is going on. Constant care programs and continuing treatment programs are a must and for some recovering addicts need to be a life long thing to ensure the same thing happens again.

Please, if you have loved ones that have chosen the path of addiction, don’t just stand by the wayside. Help them get into a program and no matter how much they fight or hate you initially for it, they will thank you for it someday, even if in the next life.
