If you think you are alone in your drug addiction, think again. The fact is there are so many of us who have difficulty kicking this problem. Without the right kind of help though, you can be sure you will most likely not succeed. If you have someone who is also addicted, that can help if you both work at it together. If you have family and friends as a good support group, that can help. It seems, however; that the best way you can receive proper help is through the work of professionals.

Drug rehab clinics provide that level of professionalism and expertise you simply cannot get from friends or relatives. They have the knowledge and experience required for a successful transition from drug addict, to a drug free citizen. Many of those who were once held captive by these drugs are now actually working in these clinics and there is a good reason for that. These people carry with them the knowledge of being addicted, therefore; they know what it is like to have these addictions, and they know how to conquer their demons and survive a full recovery. You simply cannot over estimate the power of experience.

Surviving drug rehab requires serious intervention. Those who do not use drug rehab facilities to beat addiction are much more likely to relapse back into the habit. These clinics provide a slow dose wean off of drugs, and combine that with extracurricular activities to keep the mind focused on other things. It is true that a mind that is occupied is a mind that does not wander into unhealthy habits. These activities include sports activities and group activities. This is so important; you do not want to resort to other unhealthy habits. You do not want to replace drug addiction with overeating or smoking.

Drug rehab does not have to be torture. If you are in with a group of people that all have a common goal, then you are much more likely to achieve that goal. As a patient in a drug rehab facility, there are many other patients with the same goal as you. Combine that with an experienced and willing staff and you have the perfect recipe for success. For some people each day is a struggle, but it does not have to be. The right treatment makes a real difference. Check out your local drug rehab facility to find out what they can do for you.

To help a drug addict, any addiction counselor can tell you, the first hurdle is to get the addict’s agreement to receive help. No amounts of advice or friendly mannerisms are going to make a difference if there is no willingness to quit drugs.

This can be difficult; it often is, but definitely not hopeless. This is called intervention and can be the most difficult part of their recovery from addiction. The good news is this, there are things you can do or say to bring them to the realization that help is needed. Here are some very important points to keep in mind:

They must see a good enough reason to quit.

Drug intervention is a very delicate process. It is important to remember that the drug addicted person is not fully aware of their condition. Their assessment of their own condition is almost always much rosier than what people around them perceive. Abusing drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, alcohol, methamphetamine, or even pot leaves users with lowered self-awareness while leading them to believe they are in full control. For this reason they seldom take their own addiction as seriously as do loved ones. It is imperative that they be helped to see the damages drugs are doing to them and others.

It may seem incredible that they are not aware of these effects, but that is an aspect of addiction.

You must keep your cool.

When emotions flair, the thought processes dwindle. There will likely be more than enough emotional baggage and turmoil while you’re talking to the addicted person. Make sure that you are not adding to it. If you remain calm and stick to your plan of action without being pulled off into some blind alley, you can keep the discussion on track.

If you choose to have some other family members or loved ones present during your intervention, realize that they may not be able to keep their emotions in check. Whatever-just make sure that you are in control and staying calm. Your composure will act as a point of stability which will help everyone focus.

Keep the attention on the future.

Going through drug withdrawal and rehabilitation is not an easy process. For the addict, the mere prospect might be terrifying. It is, however, necessary.

So the attention must be on the purpose of that process, the goal of treatment, namely, a repaired, capable and able individual who no longer uses or needs drugs to function. This is, after all, what the addict and all those who care enough to help him or her through this process are after-rehabilitation from the destruction of drug abuse and addiction.

Get the addict into treatment. Now.

You should have the addiction treatment center chosen and ready. People on drugs are not stable and can change their minds completely in a matter of hours, so once the user is ready to accept help, don’t waste any time. Have things ready to go and even the flight booked if possible. Get them into a good center now and let the rehabilitation process begin.

Undergoing substance abuse rehab can be pricey endeavor, nonetheless it remains to become a recommended selection specifically for people in dire need of expert dependancy rehabilitation. It can be self instructive why the expense of searching for habit rehabilitation just isn’t nearly as pricey as continuing to ingest unsafe substances that will totally ruin your existence. An alcoholic or drug addict will ultimately reach a point when his perceived “need” to drink alcohol or take drugs appears far more essential than his family, work, and all sorts of other individual, economic and social obligations.

For individuals struggling with alcoholism or drug dependancy, the only sure solution to restoration is via specialist rehabilitation. Sadly, this alternative is frequently overlooked as a result of its recognized higher price. The good news is you can find now several choices offered to finance rehab by means of healthcare financial loans, that are acquired by means of lending organizations for procedures regarded “elective” by insurance plan firms.

Substance abuse addiction is now regarded and recognized as a disease, but the majority of insurance coverage firms still offer limited coverage for rehab. In time, these insurance coverage organizations will see the advantages of rehabilitation and early intervention in avoiding dependancy. Until then, however, health care lending products can be found for those that seek out drug and alcohol rehabs.

It can be accurate that funds should in no way be an hurdle for restoration. When somebody decides to find recuperation, he should avail of all feasible options to accomplish his target. One alternative is always to find a low-cost drug and booze therapy center, but several individuals look at this degrading. Individuals who are used to selected higher requirements of residing must meet the same requirements in trying to find rehabilitation. Otherwise, they may be discouraged in their recuperation.

Yet another choice would be to find a recuperation center which features familiar comfort, protection and higher quality features. Feeling secure and protected in one’s surroundings enables the particular person going via rehabilitation to relax and focus fully on his recovery. He need not be bothered by uncomfortable particulars of his rehabilitation natural environment.

There are numerous techniques to find rehab financing. Healthcare loans are available for detoxification and rehabilitation for brief and long-term stays. Possessing the peace of mind that a top quality rehab center is obtainable to suit your needs or your loved one offers the confidence that total recuperation is certainly achievable. This peace of mind is priceless and needs to be sought at all expense.

People who comprehend the genuine advantages of your quality rehab facility won’t be discouraged by the further price, particularly in the event that you will find lending products as well as other rehab financing choices to select from. Choosing the correct rehabilitation remedy could be likened to picking the correct college training. It’s accurate that you will find free city and state colleges that could provide a degree, but the private college institutions that price a little more are also the ones that provide the greatest personalized method to education.

Picking the proper rehab facility is not different. Your option of a recuperation center that features personalized services will reap the greatest benefits in the extended run. Funding the added price in the personalized and expert rehabilitation remedy is really a little investment compared towards the heavy price of not acquiring restoration from dependancy.

Hawaii Island Recovery presents funding by way of Serenity Financial loans, a facility providing help for booze and drug dependancy treatment. The facility features fiscal aid for instant access to rehab treatment.

Reason one: The Drug Abuser Is Now in a New Group

People tend to pay most attention to the thoughts and feelings of their drugged peer group. As a young (new) drug abuser works to fit into his or her new group, they are learning how to behave all over again. There are conflicts with the new beliefs and codes of conduct of the new group and the ways of the existing group, i.e. the family. What is expected of them in the new group might be in complete opposition to the expectations of the existing group.

Some new drug users solve this dilemma by donning two personalities, one for the family and one for the druggie group. Keeping these two avatars separate can be a real juggling act, especially when it involves significant changes in appearance.

The new group actually has a completely different moral code which must be followed in order to maintain group status. Where theft might cause the person to become ostracized by the members of the former group, in the new group of drug abusers it might elevate one’s position and gain the respect of fellows. This can be seen in gangs, where initiations often involve performing some act of violence.

So when you try to get this person to see reason and leave the drugs behind, you are also asking him to give up his new group, to break the moral code he has been following and, in a way, betray his friends.

I wish there was a simple way out of this corner. If there was, drug abuse and addiction would not claim as many lives as it does. But understanding this phenomenon can give you an edge up in dealing with someone moving into a drug abusing lifestyle.

Point out to the person that there is a moral code in the family too. Show them that there is also a code of conduct in the community, and that living up to those codes is by far the more pro-survival course to take.

This could be a tough sell, as you are working at odds with the druggie friends and the social pressures that depict drug abuse as fun and enlightened.

If you suspect someone you know may have an addiction to drugs, there are signs that you can look out for. Although these signs and behaviours are signs that someone may have a problem with drug abuse, exhibiting one or more of them doesn’t necessarily mean someone is a drug addict.

* Changes in eating habits or appetite and unusual change in weight.
* The odour of a substance about someone’s person or clothes.
* Unusual hyperactivity and alertness and uncharacteristic talkativeness.
* Unexplained needle marks and/or bruises.
* Change in attitude or personality for no apparent reason.
* Unexplained tiredness and lethargy.
* Hanging out with new friends and at new places, avoiding old friends.
* Loss of interest in activities and pastimes that were previously important.
* Problems at school or work such as lack of productivity and poor attendance.
* Withdrawal from family life and group activities.
* Lack of attentiveness and absent-mindedness.
* Decreased motivation and self-esteem.
* Defensiveness when questioned and severe mood swings.
* Possible violent temper or aggressive behaviour.
* Extreme highs and lows in moods.
* Expressing paranoid thoughts and ideas.
* Sudden issues with privacy, such as locking doors and refusing entry to others.
* Secretive behaviour.
* Sudden dishonesty and possible stealing.
* Change in personal hygiene habits such as bathing less frequently.

What to do if you suspect someone is addicted to drugs

If you suspect someone close to you is addicted to drugs, try to talk to them about it. Often when someone is addicted to drugs they lose sight of how erratic or damaging their behaviour has become. It can take someone close to them to make them realise the effect their drug use could be having.

Don’t be accusatory; be open-minded and approachable. Be open about your feelings and concerns and encourage the other person to open up to you. Do some research on the help that is available, for example from your GP, local drug dependency services and rehab centres.

Drug addiction treatment

There is help available for people who are addicted to drugs. This comes in the form of:

* A rehabilitation centre
* Residential rehab clinic
* Day patient treatment centres
* Counselling
* Detox programmes
* Medication
* Group therapy
* Complementary therapies

As a writer and also a sort of addiction-ologist I cannot help but observe and reflect on the division of our nation as it pertains to Michael Jackson. The overarching question seems to be should we revere him or should we condemn him? Was he a Semi-God, or a monster? And the whole climate of confusion, as well as the depth of mourning, harks me back to the age of 9 and the death of Elvis Presley. I can remember foggily asking in those sad days…How could this be?

And I can see that it is a question we are all asking again.

And if you expanded this question it might sound something like this… “How could someone so talented, so gifted, so powerfully able to touch human beings have come to this?” And the very way that we were touched by Elvis Presley and later by Michael Jackson seems to indicate a depth of humanity in both that is starkly contradicted by their behavior.

So how do we reconcile this seeming contradiction? We look here and we look there. We split up and take sides. Demi-God-ers face off with Monster-ites. We argue amongst ourselves. Those who want to deny and forget the monstrosities condemn those who want to deny and forget the greatness of The King of Pop. And the same also happens in reverse.

And so we create a house divided in our very nation. And it is the same divided house that has been in existence in millions of torn homes across our nation for years innumerable. And in our ‘nation-house’ we see the same denial, the same determination to take sides, and the same fierce loyalty and confusion about which side to take that has existed in torn homes forever. And in those torn homes as in our ‘nation-home’ we see aberrant and criminal behaviors like those of Michael Jackson. And in those torn homes as in our ‘nation home’ we see loose cannon behaviors like those of Elvis Presley. And in those torn homes, as in our ‘nation-home’, we hang on for the greatness, and recoil from the depravity. And in those torn homes, as in our nation home, there is one common denominator…the existence of a drug addict, alcoholic, or substance abuser. And now we uncover what is very probably the same common denominator in Michael Jackson in his abuse of prescription drugs.

As an educator in the field of addiction, I pray for the day that we truly understand that drugs and alcohol affect the very way that human beings think. I hope we will someday see that each and every drug, including alcohol, affects the functioning of the human brain in a multitude of ways. And when a person is on drugs and alcohol, he or she cannot be trusted to follow the rules of conscience or values. And the longer the person has been taking drugs or alcohol, the less conscience and values we will see. And as the drugging or drinking progresses, there comes a time when a person’s behavior and thinking goes 100% opposite to common values, common sense, and even common human feeling. And there even comes a time when the person’s thinking is so askew that he or she will justify the commission of atrocities and crimes even when the drug is not present.

I was a lover of Elvis as much as many of you are lovers of Michael. As such I am sometimes guiltily thankful that the king died before he could reconcile himself to doing something worse than shooting out a television set. I never would have wanted to see atrocity coming from the man who brought tears to my eyes when he sang words like…

“If I can dream of a better land, where all my brothers walk hand in hand, tell me why can’t that dream come true.”

And yet I have a fear that regardless of Michael and regardless of Elvis, we as a people will go merrily along on our well-worn path, drinking and drugging our way to our own personal versions of Neverland. We will continue to use prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, alcohol, illicit and illegal drugs, club drugs, and some of us will even suck on aerosol cans or drink rubbing alcohol to alter our brains and get high. And we will believe with all of our hearts that what happened to the King of Rock and Roll and what happened to the King of Pop will never happen to us. We will believe that we will never become like them. We will believe that we alone are impervious to the affects of drugs and alcohol on our minds. We will believe like Elvis believed and like Michael believed- thereby creating our own real-world version of “Thriller Night.”

The stories that surround Michael Jackson’s life have gained much international attention for the last month. Never would one imagine that he would have stolen the hearts of thousands with his music, charm and talent, and would exit this life taking with him the tear drops of millions of people. On June 25, 2009 it was not just Michael Jackson that died, but many people died internally as they saw their music idol laid to rest.

Many criticisms from Anti-Michael activists have made it their obligation to defame, slander and water the image of the King of Pop to another drug addict that went above the law with his money and power. In some popular forums, thousands dish out their hate in three scathing words-’So Long Pedophile’.

It must be pointed out that the intention of this article is not to condone in anyway the questionable conduct of Mr. Jackson, but to point out one thing that was overlooked throughout these years prior to his comeback for an international tour, and that is, his heart.

When asked in an interview with a British journalist who he was, Michael responded that he was Peter Pan. This response caused great alarm worldwide but only a close introspection of his statement would reveal the character of an individual that wanted to see life through the eyes of a child, with no cares, no threats from scrupulous individuals and no hate.

It was obvious that he did not achieve this goal, as his constant use of drugs debilitated his heath and image to many of his fans. When the final day of his life arrived, reports say that the cause of death was a heart attack, but the fact is that with all that he underwent in his life he was already dead internally.

People who turn to drugs are looking for a solution to rekindle the drive they once had for life. With the constant pressures from outsiders and self, they try to find the strength by numbing the pain they feel when they are criticized, anxious and depressed. Only one who has trod the journey that a drug addict has went through would fully understand what they feel when they are tempted to use drugs. While many would happily get on there high horses and swear on their mother’s life that they would never use drugs, these same individuals react differently under pressure and stress. People are the product of their environment and while some manage to rise above it, others are frozen in regrets, sadness and defeat.

It was not just drugs that killed Michael Jackson, but every single individual that hurled their criticisms and pointed their fingers at him in his moment of defeat are responsible to pushing him to his grave. Like the alumni that are under our care at Mountainside Treatment Center, many have been pushed into drugs by the lack of love and compassion to help a weak soul.

If anyone or anything is going to be condemned for his death, let us all point a finger at ourselves, for in some small way many pushed him to use drugs. With just a ‘grain of salt’ of mercy many helped kill Michael Jackson, and not just him but hundreds of stars that we assume are super men and women.

What do you think of when you hear the words ‘drug addict’? Do all kinds of scary images come to mind? In my 13 years of working with people who have addictions, each one of them has been an ordinary human being caught up in extraordinary situations. Not one of them has ever wanted to grow up to be a drug addict. These people come from all walks of life, all demographics and who may be functioning or non-functioning with regards to their lives, jobs, etc.

One group of addictions that have been underestimated is prescription drug abuse. There seems to be a different mindset with regards to this addiction mainly because prescription drugs are seen as helpful, not harmful and that they are given to us by doctors so they are safe. This could not be farther from the truth.

Prescription drug use is on the rise in the arena of drug abuse. This is mostly due to the improper use of these drugs and the type of drugs themselves. Prescription drugs that most commonly become addictive are ‘narcotic’ based drugs. These drugs are painkillers mostly, but others are for anxiety, sleep disorders, muscle relaxers as well as stimulant and depressive drugs.

Two factors usually come into play when an addiction is formed by use of prescription drugs. One way being that the drug is taken improperly. This means that some people, especially the elderly or people suffering with cognitive disorders may forget if they’ve taken the pills and take more, or take them in a way that was not prescribed, leading to doubling and even tripling the amount that was prescribed. This can have devastating effects. They may take other peoples prescription meds that are not suitable for them, even though they have the same symptoms.

Another way is that people become addicted to the ‘effects’ and sometimes ’side effects’ of the medication. They like the fact that they can relax without worries when they take their meds, or that the pain goes away and also gives them a euphoric feeling. They then start taking the medication whenever they want to reproduce those effects, regardless of whether they are in pain, can’t sleep, or whatever the original issue was.

If you or someone you know is addicted to prescription drugs, please call for help, or tell your doctor. This is serious and can be life threatening. You can call Telehealth Ontario 1-866-797-0000 for information about the drugs and their effects or you can call any drug treatment centre. The phone number for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) which can provide information and treatment is 416-535-8501 or 1-800-463-6273. Keep your face to the sunshine.

For many years now it has become more apparent that nutrition played an important role in the life of a drug addict, alcoholic, methadone patient or other that might be chemically imbalanced. Today many are looking for answers to help solve the problem of nutritional deficiencies in alcoholics, drug addicts and methadone treatment patients. This search was pioneered by a group of doctors who developed a vitamin mineral supplement to help people with drug problems. Today more people are paying attention to this problem with their clients whom are in treatment. In many cases it is being added to their treatment plans. The big problem then is what course of action needs to be taken to positively affect a change in their client’s health and nutrition.

Many times the course of action to address the problem is to tell the person to start taking a “good” vitamin. Maybe they tell them to go to a health food store and try some specific product that might give them some relief. This can be expensive road to follow, trying to find the right vitamin supplement for each case. Vitamin B in various forms is most often recommended for low energy but that is just one issue. Then people are told another product to help other issues (Something for this and something else for that.). The result is that there is no real change because the treatment is not complete. The problems persist and sometimes even worsen. The person gives up and becomes skeptic towards the benefit of health and nutritional supplements.

The other problem is that because of their problem they expect and want instantaneous gratification. They don’t realize that the problem developed over a period of time usually a long time. Most vitamin and mineral supplements are developed for “normal” people (whatever that is). They may not even work for those people, much less work for people with specific problems such as drug and alcohol problems and people under going methadone treatment or maintenance. Sometimes in methadone treatment clients experience the methadone side effects of extreme constipation, sugar craving, low energy and heavy sweating. The other problem is people with drug and alcohol problems are used to “feeling” something. This is not generally the case with most of the products they take. If they do feel the product it usually a short lived high, burst of energy or something of that nature. Then comes the let down.

Now there are Vitamin supplements developed for addicts and those inn various treatments. The active principles used in developing this product get the nutrient to the cellular level. If the nutrient never reaches the cellular level then the body doesn’t benefit from the nutrient. The two active principles are chelation and an integrated antioxidant system. Chelated products are easily absorbed in the body while retaining their nutritional properties as you would expect from their natural sources. The body needs antioxidants to inactivate or minimize the effects free radicals or Oxidants. Although beta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E are commonly taken as antioxidants, they may be harmful if taken inappropriately. However when processed corectly they will be in the form that is used by the body to do what antioxidants are supposed to do in the body.

When a product is designed properly and for a specific purpose it has a much better chance of doing what it supposed do. If given the appropriate nutrients in a form the body needs and can use, the body will then do what it is supposed to do, be healthy. Then you will function like you were designed to.

Drug users are a threat not only to themselves but to their loved ones as well. It isn’t a question as to why you should put an end to your drug abuse as there are thousands of medical reasons in which if listed, could go on forever. But that isn’t the only case seeing that the usage of drugs doesn’t only affect one physically but also mentally and emotionally as well.

Research shows that when a parent falls into the depths of becoming a drug addict, they risk the chances of producing a happy family. Those who get addicted would be more interested in obtaining their substances rather than their kids homework, the plumbing and what’s for dinner tomorrow night. So the first fallout would be the bond within the family. There would be a gap in communication, in affection and in concern within the family which would result in troubled children with messed up childhoods.

Aside from that, depending on the frequency and intensity of the addict, chances are they would have been let go from whatever job they may have had and would play no part in contributing finances to the family. In addition to that, they would dip into whatever family savings there are, pull all financial sources just to obtain their drugs to experience that temporary high feeling. This would have a great impact on the lives of the partner and child involved as they would have no stable means of finances and would suffer through these current economic crises.

Moreover, when drugs are used around children who have yet to be educated the right way, these harmful substances could fall into the wrong hands which could be fatal and change the quality of the kids’ life. We don’t want to see our kids to grow up following the footsteps of those who can’t hold a family together. So get help and say no to drugs for the betterment of yourself, your kids, and your family.
