Drug rehab programs are straining to handle a prescription drug crisis spiraling out of control. This crisis is due in part to medical doctors who prescribe opioid painkillers like Vicodin, OxyContin, and Dilaudid with an alarming frequency and an unequivocal negligence of the precautions warranted because of the addictiveness of these potent medications.

In the 1960’s and ’70’s when our current drug crisis was born, the “pusher man” was both feared and reviled. Hollow-faced junkies with needles dangling from their limp, wasted arms filled the news magazines. The life of a drug addict is miserable and ignominious. The harm done by prolonged drug abuse to the addict himself and his family is immeasurable. Hundreds of families crack under its pressure every year and thousands of people lose their loved ones to this menace.

Unpredictability, physical illnesses, loss of love and respect, and ultimate death are the only outcomes of drug addiction. An untreated addict invariably ends his life in penury and misery. Many addicts, unfortunately, do not understand that they have a problem. For them, drug abuse is a prop to support their sagging lives. It is very difficult to make them see reason. But in many cases, the addict wants to get out of the dreadful tentacles, but cannot because his body is heavily dependent on drugs for survival.

Drug rehab is the process of saving the addict from the clutches of addiction and set him back in the society as a healthy human being. Every drug treatment programs worth its salt is divided into two parts, the detox stage and the mind education stage. Overcoming drug dependency is difficult. Withdrawal symptoms would invariably crop up during drug intervention stage as the addict is in a make believe world where it can survive on nothing other than drugs. But the stage can be effectively crossed if the drug treatment centre has a set of intervention experts who care about only the wellbeing of its inmates.
