Why Won’t a Drug Addict Listen? Reason 1

Reason one: The Drug Abuser Is Now in a New Group

People tend to pay most attention to the thoughts and feelings of their drugged peer group. As a young (new) drug abuser works to fit into his or her new group, they are learning how to behave all over again. There are conflicts with the new beliefs and codes of conduct of the new group and the ways of the existing group, i.e. the family. What is expected of them in the new group might be in complete opposition to the expectations of the existing group.

Some new drug users solve this dilemma by donning two personalities, one for the family and one for the druggie group. Keeping these two avatars separate can be a real juggling act, especially when it involves significant changes in appearance.

The new group actually has a completely different moral code which must be followed in order to maintain group status. Where theft might cause the person to become ostracized by the members of the former group, in the new group of drug abusers it might elevate one’s position and gain the respect of fellows. This can be seen in gangs, where initiations often involve performing some act of violence. (more…)

* Changes in eating habits or appetite and unusual change in weight.
* The odour of a substance about someone’s person or clothes.
* Unusual hyperactivity and alertness and uncharacteristic talkativeness.
* Unexplained needle marks and/or bruises.
* Change in attitude or personality for no apparent reason.

Drug Education in a Continuation High School

Published: Apr 10th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

A continuation school is a place for students who have been found to need special attention to keep up in high school, or middle school and been sent to the “alternative education center”. They are not necessarily sent there because of drugs, or behavior problems, but often that is the case.

The school today was for students who were expelled completely from their district’s school system. While a couple of them were booted because of behavior problems, and because of attendance records that were so bad they were just wasting everyone’s time, the largest percentage of these kids were there as a result of substance abuse. Even the usual “last chance” school is a step above this one. I have attended this type of facility so many times that I really have gotten to know the kids and I have to say I really like them. Steroids in Youth Sports

Published: Apr 9th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

It used to be that kids would join little league teams excited to play baseball, football and hockey. Young boys all over the country had dreams of being the next Mickey Mantle or Roger Staubauch. These days, as kids innocently join teams ready to begin their dream of becoming a professional in their chosen sport, and as parents cheer from the stands hoping that their little one doesn’t get hurt, the pressure to be bigger, faster and stronger than the other guy gets harder to ignore.

With professional sports contracts paying out millions of dollars for each player every year, a kid’s dreams can bring him fame and a pretty big fortune. But only if he is successful at beating out every other kid with the same dream. Out of the 1,500 or so active professional football players, there are maybe millions of kids who dream of being a great pro quarterback. With those odds, kids, sometimes coaches, and sometimes even parents begin looking for an edge for their child. Even though they are illegal to use more and more kids are turning to steroids to give them the edge they are looking for.

Steroids are hormone drugs that make athletes stronger and more muscular. This is an obvious advantage on the football field. Kids realize that their high school sports years are when college recruiters are going to make offers to the best players to play on a college team. Being recruited by a major college means that the player will get not only a free ride scholarship to the college but will play on a great team and then maybe get a job on a pro team. This is true for high school baseball, soccer, and hockey team players too. Kids are sometimes introduced to steroids as young as junior high school and sometimes the pressure to be the best makes the steroids too hard to resist. Also, some kids are given silent permission to use steroids by their coaches and parents because these adults may recognize the signs that a teen is using steroids but not do anything about it. Drug Abuse and Addiction

Published: Apr 5th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

Addiction, as it seems to everyone, is a continued and progressive process. It only increases by the day and becomes very hard to revert back. Moreover the causes and effects can be erratic making one feel totally weird. Now the affected person, the addict, is the one who doesn’t quite know what is happening around him and doesn’t seem to be in control of his surroundings and the things happening to him. Now drug addiction is something which makes the addict go to miserable depths of desperation in every aspect of life. The basic reason for the potency of drugs is that they act on the neural system and produce hallucinations. The hallucinations produced are at such a higher degree that no wonder these narcotics are called hallucinogenic drugs.

Talking about drug addiction, though many consider it to be a disease, it can be interpreted as something related to human emotions just like talking and feeling. Thus it can be evaluated by talk-therapy and procedures like that, the only difference being that it infinitely harder compared to any other problem. Identifying the symptoms has been and continues to be the basic step towards the cure of any disorder and this is no different. The symptoms are basically eating disorders characterized by loss of appetite, which explains the lean and weak frame of junkies. Other symptoms are formation of dark circles resulting from insomnia which in itself is a symptom, and other side effects. (more…)

Strategies to Avoid Relapse to Drugs – Strategy Two, Fill the Gigantic Hole Left by Drug Addiction

Published: Feb 7th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

Addiction to a drug or to alcohol is an all-consuming compulsion, one which demands attention, almost to the exclusion of all else. It can be a full-time job for the addict. Getting drugs or alcohol and consuming them, then being stoned or drunk occupies a large portion of their time.

In the case of drugs such as heroin or cocaine, using is definitely a morning to night occupation. The addict will wake up and look to see how much drug there is for that day’s consumption. If the supply is low, the planning of how to get more of the drug takes up the morning’s activities. Faked prescriptions, phone calls to borrow money, scams, and other methods of getting the price of drugs together is always first on the to-do list. (more…)

A drug addiction is a compulsive disorder. Addiction can be of varied kinds, namely drugs, alcohol, gambling, spending, smoking, sex, eating or any other behavior. Are All Drugs Addictive?

Published: Feb 4th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

Addiction, in medical terms is a condition in which a human body depends on something for its normal functioning, which further leads to physical dependence. Addiction triggers as a mental issue and proceeds to a physical reliance. In such a state a person tends to rely on a typical substance or a drug that seems to give him relief. An escalated drug tolerance is what we know as addiction. One can even get addicted to prescribed drugs; it need not necessarily be due to drug abuse.

It is quite tough a job to answer whether all drugs are addictive or not, it depends on how one defines addiction. Some feel that psychological dependence on a drug or any other substance is addiction. It can be anything. Some people are inclined towards these things and feel that they cannot live without the influence of the substance. This is more of problem with the person who is using it than the substance or drug itself. Dependence is after all a human nature; we cannot blame a drug just because we depend on it. This has more to do with the mental state of one’s mind than the physical. (more…)

5 Advantages to Home Drug Testing

Published: Dec 23rd, 2009 | Author: admin Add Comment

A home drug test is a scientific piece of equipment that allows you to conduct an experiment at home that tells you whether the person from whom the sample is taken has been taking drugs or not. While home drug testing is becoming extremely popular among parents of teens, the drug testing kits are also being used in schools, offices and small businesses.

These home tests can be used to detect harmful drugs like THC (called marijuana, weed, pot or hash), opiates (heroin, morphine or codeine), cocaine (crack or snow), MDMA (ecstasy or X), Amphetamines (speed or uppers) and Benzodiazepines (Valium or Xanax).

A home drug test has various advantages over a test that is done in the laboratory. The top 5 advantages of testing drugs at home are listed below:

1. Faster results – This test can be done within minutes. You do not have to collect the sample, deliver it to the laboratory and then wait patiently for the results to come in. With a drug test kit, you can take a sample and use a disposable drug test to know the answer to the question that has been plaguing you for some time. (more…)
