To first understand opioid addiction, you must first understand what opioids are. The term opioid refers to any drug or chemical that attaches (like a key fits into a lock) to sites in the brain called opioid receptors. The human body makes its own opioids (called endorphins) but the opioids we are concerned with when we talk about opioid addiction are those that are manufactured in a laboratory or made by plants. For instance, morphine and codeine are found in the extract (the opium) of seeds from the poppy plant, and this opium is processed into heroin. Most prescription painkillers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone are synthesized in the laboratory. When a person becomes dependent upon these drugs, they need opioid addiction treatment.
What are Common Types of Opioids?
Opioids may be prescribed legally by doctors (for pain, cough suppression or opioid dependence) or they may be taken illegally for their mood-altering effects–euphoria, sedation, “to feel better”, or for some, opioids are taken “just to feel normal”. Not everyone who takes an opioid is at risk for dependence requiring opioid addiction treatment, but these drugs are commonly abused. Continue reading ‘What is Opioid Addiction?’ »

Heroin abuse and addiction is a very serious problem all over the United States. The medical profession now realizes addiction is a disease because of the way human beings are affected both mentally and physically from the drug. Detoxification and rehabilitation are necessary for a person who has a severe addiction to heroin, and if the problem is severe enough the person might actually require an inpatient long-term treatment program to effectively deal with the situation.
A long-term care program is designed to handle severe forms of heroin abuse and addiction; it can be highly beneficial to a person who is unable to stop using the drug alone. A rehab facility is well-equipped to deal with the withdrawal and detoxification period associated with severe heroin abuse. A professional rehab facility provides care for the person under the supervision of a trained medical staff, which ensures the detox period goes smoothly and without any harm coming to the patient.
While enrolled in a treatment facility, a heroin addict will receive an intense and aggressive care plan which will address all the components of the addiction as a whole and not just treat the substance abuse. Using group and individual therapies, behavior modification, life skills courses and counseling sessions, an addict will share stories and struggles with others in the same situation, which is an important part of learning effective communication and interpersonal skills.

One thing is for sure – heroin does not care about the color of your skin, how old you are, or where you come from. The bottom line is it does not matter whether you smoke, snort, or shoot heroin because if you use it long enough there will be consequences.
The consequences are usually heroin addiction but are not limited to this because there is also jail and death. One of the most feared things of all is heroin withdrawal or in other words detox from heroin. One can detox in a variety of ways; for instance a common detox from heroin is to go cold turkey.
This usually only happens when an addict is too broke or sick to hustle the money to get one more fix. In any case they are forced stop using heroin to for one reason or another.

Will a 21 day of outpatient detox program help heroin addicts recover
In San Francisco there are many who suffer from heroin addiction. Heroin is processed from morphine which is extracted from the seed pods of the poppy plant. It is usually injected, snorted/sniffed or smoked. Abusers of the drug take great risks every time they use since they never know how potent the drug is or what it may be cut with. Injection of the drug gives the user a rapid onset of euphoria that lasts about 7-8 seconds and tends to be the most predominant method of heroin use among those who are seeking treatment. Heroin addiction is killing people everyday and Narconon’s premier facility Narconon Arrowhead located in Oklahoma wants to help save those lives and we have been since 2001 when we opened are doors.
There are thousands of treatment types offered through out the U.S to help those who are addicted. Finding the right treatment for you or your loved one can be a challenge especially if your not sure what to look for. People always want the easiest quickest fix for just about everything these days but, when we are talking about addiction it’s not an over night quick fix. ADDICTION is a disease. Yes, all the world authorities are unanimously together on this conclusion after all the scientific evidences that it is a disease that affects human mind in such a way that it leads to an irresistible compulsion to perform certain behavior. It may be the use of alcohol, any drug like Hash, Heroin, Tranquillizers, Cocaine or at times just a behavior, like gambling, excessive and uncontrolled use of mobile phone or internet, love or sex addiction or even something considered a virtue like work holism or religious extremism.
The journey from first use of a drug or a behavior to becoming a slave to this disease is not traveled in days or months; rather, it takes years at times before a person gets so much involved in it that his whole life starts revolving around this particular drug or behavior. His life becomes unmanageable. Compulsion to use the drug or perform the behavior is the hallmark of addiction. Loss of control over the behavior is the cornerstone.
