To help a drug addict, any addiction counselor can tell you, the first hurdle is to get the addict’s agreement to receive help. No amounts of advice or friendly mannerisms are going to make a difference if there is no willingness to quit drugs.

This can be difficult; it often is, but definitely not hopeless. This is called intervention and can be the most difficult part of their recovery from addiction. The good news is this, there are things you can do or say to bring them to the realization that help is needed. Here are some very important points to keep in mind:

They must see a good enough reason to quit.

Drug intervention is a very delicate process. It is important to remember that the drug addicted person is not fully aware of their condition. Their assessment of their own condition is almost always much rosier than what people around them perceive. Abusing drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, alcohol, methamphetamine, or even pot leaves users with lowered self-awareness while leading them to believe they are in full control. For this reason they seldom take their own addiction as seriously as do loved ones. It is imperative that they be helped to see the damages drugs are doing to them and others.

It may seem incredible that they are not aware of these effects, but that is an aspect of addiction.

You must keep your cool.

When emotions flair, the thought processes dwindle. There will likely be more than enough emotional baggage and turmoil while you’re talking to the addicted person. Make sure that you are not adding to it. If you remain calm and stick to your plan of action without being pulled off into some blind alley, you can keep the discussion on track.

If you choose to have some other family members or loved ones present during your intervention, realize that they may not be able to keep their emotions in check. Whatever-just make sure that you are in control and staying calm. Your composure will act as a point of stability which will help everyone focus.

Keep the attention on the future.

Going through drug withdrawal and rehabilitation is not an easy process. For the addict, the mere prospect might be terrifying. It is, however, necessary.

So the attention must be on the purpose of that process, the goal of treatment, namely, a repaired, capable and able individual who no longer uses or needs drugs to function. This is, after all, what the addict and all those who care enough to help him or her through this process are after-rehabilitation from the destruction of drug abuse and addiction.

Get the addict into treatment. Now.

You should have the addiction treatment center chosen and ready. People on drugs are not stable and can change their minds completely in a matter of hours, so once the user is ready to accept help, don’t waste any time. Have things ready to go and even the flight booked if possible. Get them into a good center now and let the rehabilitation process begin.

Addiction to opioids like morphine, heroin, codeine, hyrdocodone, and oxycodone can be treated with Subutex, or generically known as buprenorphine. It treats the symptoms of withdrawal that abstaining from the drugs can cause. The effectiveness of the treatment drug is that it attaches to the drug’s receptors which will prevent getting high. This helps people overcome their addiction to these drugs but you will need to be weaned from the buprenorphine to avoid getting withdrawals when you stop using it.

Buprenorphine can be administered either by mouth or injected for patients. Once you leave the rehab or detox facility you will take it orally with pills or through the skin with a patch. Pills are the most common form. People also see a doctor in an outpatient context to detox outside of a facility with this medication. It takes a lot of discipline and support, to do this outside of a facility. This treatment medication is long lasting and the frequency in which people use it can differ. Some will take the drug daily while other every other day. It is important however to not overdose yourself as it can be very toxic to your system. Also, taking it with other medications can cause respiratory problems.

Some other medications that should be avoided when taking buprenorphine are sedatives, anti-depressants, antibiotics, certain anti-histamines, and some HIV medications. It is vital that you discuss any medications you are currently taking with the physician prescribing you buprenorphine no matter what it is. Since recovery is very important you don\’t want anything to sabotage it.

A small percentage of patients using buprenorphine may experience some strong side effects. Some people can develop allergies which can be life threatening. The patient may get swelling in the lips, face, or even the tongue. They can develop hives, or have difficulty breathing. These reactions are similar to a bee sting or other strong swelling reactions. Jaundice can be another serious side effect of using this medication. You should look for signs of clay colored stool, and yellow in the white areas around the eyes. Immediately consult your doctor if you are throwing up blood, have a hard time breathing, are light headed, pass black stool, have periods of confusion or severe mood changes.

However, for the majority of those who use buprenorphine or Subutex, it is safe and a way to get off the drugs that were so addictive. Your doctor will discuss all the benefits and side effects with you before he prescribes it. As long as you work with your doctor, are honest with them, and take only the dosage recommended, you will be able to eventually have a drug free body. Do not go against the medical advice and be sure to avoid using of any sort no matter how harmless it may seem.

There is a new drug pusher in town. He does not hang out in the alley or on the street corner-and it is not Heroin or crack this time. This time the pusher is hanging out much closer to home and the drugs are what most people would call medicines. More teens abuse these than all types of illicit drugs combined, if you exclude marijuana.

Online drug stores are happy to dispense any controlled drug at a price much higher than one would pay at a regular pharmacy and an estimated 85% of these sites require no prescriptions or positive identification. Drugs such as Opioid (opiumlike) pain-killers (Oxycontin, Vicodin), muscle relaxants and anti-anxiety drugs (Valium, Xanax), and stimulants such as Ritalin are the most often abused.

Left-over pills in the medicine cabinet can become a windfall for a young person looking to get high or make a little extra cash at school. Many teens who would never touch illicit drugs might abuse prescription drugs because they seem to be a safe way to get high and they are so readily available.

The truth is that while these medications might be taken as prescribed and for short periods when needed with relative safety, the amounts being taken to “cop a buzz” are way beyond the approved dosages and could be lethal.

Abusers are using these drugs to carefully create a tailor-made, desired feelings. Before school or a party they may take Oxycontin or Vicodin to get high, then add some Valium or Xanax to mellow it out a bit. Later, a couple of sleeping pills to get some rest or, if the party is still going, a little Ritalin to last the night. This is a widespread activity that screams of a lack of adequate drug awareness instruction.

Combining two or more drugs can cause different results than the same drugs taken separately. This can occur in several ways:

1. Inhibitory. One drug may block the effects of another. This can lead to a dangerous overdose because of a lessened perception of the effects of the drug and the user may believe they have not reached their limit.

2. Additive. The effects of both drugs are present and one does not affect the other.

3. Synergistic effect. In this case, one drug can multiply the effect of another with totally unpredictable results.

Combining any drugs is risky, but the deadliest combination is this:

As the user takes the drugs more frequently, Tolerance builds. This means that more is required to feel the same high. Eventually, to achieve ANY pleasurable effects, dangerously high doses are needed. At the same time, the drug abuser’s mind becomes more and more clouded and their ability to make clear judgments is reduced and they are more likely to take deadly amounts of the drugs.

This combination of higher doses and poorer judgment results in the souring numbers of overdoses seen in the last decade from prescription drugs.

While much is being done to keep these medicines out of the hands of those who would misuse them, ultimately, it comes down to parents and educators to ensure young people have what they need: the truth about these drugs and what their abuse can do.

Heroin abuse and addiction is a very serious problem all over the United States. The medical profession now realizes addiction is a disease because of the way human beings are affected both mentally and physically from the drug. Detoxification and rehabilitation are necessary for a person who has a severe addiction to heroin, and if the problem is severe enough the person might actually require an inpatient long-term treatment program to effectively deal with the situation.

A long-term care program is designed to handle severe forms of heroin abuse and addiction; it can be highly beneficial to a person who is unable to stop using the drug alone. A rehab facility is well-equipped to deal with the withdrawal and detoxification period associated with severe heroin abuse. A professional rehab facility provides care for the person under the supervision of a trained medical staff, which ensures the detox period goes smoothly and without any harm coming to the patient.

While enrolled in a treatment facility, a heroin addict will receive an intense and aggressive care plan which will address all the components of the addiction as a whole and not just treat the substance abuse. Using group and individual therapies, behavior modification, life skills courses and counseling sessions, an addict will share stories and struggles with others in the same situation, which is an important part of learning effective communication and interpersonal skills.

There are many people who have successfully beat heroin addiction and with the right program, recovery is possible. Heroin is an invasive drug and one of the most difficult to kick; a person is often mistaken into thinking it can be done without the help of a professional drug treatment center. Without professional drug rehab assistance a person is setting themselves up to fail and fall back into old addictive behavior patterns that lead to relapse.

Through intensive counseling and therapy, the heroin addict learns to realize and address the triggers that led to the addiction. The person will also learn how to make positive life changes which will make it easier to resist the temptations that accompany heroin abuse. There are also therapies and counseling sessions which will focus on the family of the addict, so that everyone involved in the addict’s life can learn how to forgive each other and repair the damage and pain caused by the addiction.

Through 12-step meetings and other modalities, heroin addiction is faced head on and all of the problems are handled effectively. With the care and compassion that can only come from a professional rehab facility, a heroin addict can turn life around and turn away from the triggers that cause heroin abuse. When in treatment, a person must make a firm and heartfelt decision to become clean and sober, the struggles are difficult and the road is long, but in the end it is all worth it. Saying good-bye to an addiction to heroin allows a person to grow and learn how to live as a healthy, productive member of society. With time and the right treatment program, long-term sobriety is an entirely possible reality and cycle of addiction can be broken.

An opiate that belongs to the morphine-codeine family, heroin goes by the chemical name of diacetylmorphine. This vastly illegal drug is derived from the opium poppy.

Heroin is among the easiest of drugs to become addicted to. Many heroin addicts need no more than just one attempt at the drug to become addicted, even if mildly at first. Like many other drugs, heroin is used intravenously, or through smoking or snorting through the nostrils. Of these, the method most abusers prefer is injection, because the effect that is got from this method is considered the highest. This makes it the most popular method of use of heroin.

Effects of heroin: Heroin has its own way of working on the system. It primarily acts on the central nervous system initially. It starts acting within seven seconds of ingestion, when taken intravenously. In the few seconds of its being absorbed into the system, heroin can cause euphoria.

Immediately after being taken in, heroin enters the area that is the barrier between the brain and blood. This causes heroin to get converted into morphine. Once the euphoria settles down, it leads to dry mouth, skin flushing, and a feeling of heaviness. This in turn can lead to vomiting, nausea and itching. Following this, the heroin addict normally becomes sedate and sleepy for many hours. Many of the vital cognitive functions slow down and get impaired momentarily. These include the ability to reason. Heart beat and breathing slow down considerably.

The most important long term effect of heroin is its ability to be an addictive drug. Drugs are in themselves addictive, but heroin addiction is found to be the fastest to get into, and the most abusive of all addictions. This addiction has its own detrimental effects on the brain, mind and body.

Physically, long term heroin addiction leads to damage to the arteries, lungs, liver, kidneys and veins, and several infections, abscesses and bone diseases such as arthritis.

Emotionally, heroin addiction can very soon reach a point where seeking the drug becomes the sole objective of life for the addict. This has various serious ramifications, such as social isolation, family dislocation and professional under performance.

Heroin withdrawal symptoms, which start within hours of the last ingestion, include pain in the muscle and bone, restlessness, diarrhea, insomnia, cold flashes with goose bumps, or what are called “cold turkey”, strong body movements, convulsions and vomiting. Sometimes, these symptoms can last months. These however, are seldom fatal, and a heroin detox center can take care of these symptoms.

Treatment for heroin dependency: For heroin dependency, a combination of methods has to be tried to bring the heroin addict out of the “zone”. The first step is detoxification, wherein the effects of abuse are purged; this is followed by systematic lessening of craving tendencies. Drugs that help in this are buprenorphine and methadone. Finally, behavior therapies are introduced; typically at a heroin rehab center. These may include cognitive behavioral interventional therapies which are aimed at redesigning the outlook the addict has towards life, and help him deal with stressful situations without recourse to the drug. A method that combines the two approaches “medical and behavioral” is considered the best.

Most people associate methadone with opioid treatment, to help addicts get off heroin, for example, and ease them into recovery, free of any drugs or pharmacological intervention. By design it works, but as with anything, there are times when the use of the drug is abused.

For starters, methadone is a synthetic opioid, and beyond drug addiction treatment, methadone is used as an analgesic for treatment of various pain conditions. It is a powerful pain killer, used as a substitute for morphine, and it is less expensive. When methadone is prescribed, there is careful monitoring of the dosage and frequency of use, so patients are closely watched.

Why methadone for opioid addiction treatment? Patients are placed on a methadone program to help with the withdrawal symptoms from addiction to opiate drugs, such as heroin. Those suffering from the disease will explain that the withdrawal is worse than the actual addiction, so many avoid treatment for fear that the withdrawal will be too severe. Also, when off their opiate drug of choice, addicts have to deal with the intense cravings that go along with abstinence.

Therefore, methadone, used under very controlled circumstances, is a tool to help addicts come down off the drugs without severe consequences. Understand that methadone is classified as a schedule II of the Controlled Substance Act, so even though it is used as a tool for treatment, it is still a powerful drug and can easily be abused. When used as an analgesic, physicians must have Drug Enforcement Agency registration. You can see that there are serious controls on methadone, and getting a prescription is not easy.

The physicians who are authorized to prescribe methadone have made an application to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the FDA, along with the Department of Health and Social Services, decide the dosage and the cases where methadone may be used. Clinics that use it have extra state and federal licenses. Moreover, because there are so many controls, there are only about 700 methadone clinics in the country, and some states do not have any methadone clinics at all. Addicts do not have an easy path to methadone treatment, and even if they do have access, the regimen itself is highly controlled and many addicts have difficulty following the plan.

Methadone can be taken by injection, or by mouth. When administered for the control of opioid withdrawal, methadone doses are slowly increased over five to seven days, but this is not always the case. It depends on how the patient responds to the treatment. For example, if the patient has a high tolerance to opioids, then the dosage will be higher, if necessary. Outpatients are encouraged to make frequent reports to medical staff during the early stages of treatment. This communication is vital to determining the proper dosage of the methadone. Each individual may need to have several adjustments before the right dosage is achieved.

Because methadone is a synthetic opioid, there are side effects which should be clearly understood. Patients can experience respiratory depression, which of course is a major concern for heroin users. Likewise, it is not uncommon for patients to have nausea, or to become confused. Patients also need to understand that methadone and alcohol do not mix, and the use of any other drug must be strictly by design and carefully considered.

There are alternatives to methadone treatment. For example, buprenorphine allows for an easier withdrawal. Remember, the patient has to withdraw from the heroin, and then be eased off the methadone. Buprenorphine is also different because if a person decides to abuse the drug for recreational purposes, they will be disappointed because they won’t get high. They will, however, get the side effects. Opioid addiction in the last 10 years has also seen the advent of suboxone treatment, but like methadone, suboxone, a synthetic opioid, can be abused.

The important thing to remember about methadone detox is that the drug is used to help a person avoid the discomfort of withdrawal. It is a serious drug and carries serious consequences when abused. Persons seeking methadone treatment need to understand that the strict controls and the heavy oversight of their program are needed to ensure that the treatment is effective.

Do you feel anxious about getting your prescription filled before it runs out? Do you need to take more pills than before to achieve the effect you desire? Do you get your prescriptions from many doctors? Perhaps you are, like many others, a sufferer of a drug addiction. One of the most common addictions in the American society today is a relatively unheard of drug called hydrocodone. So, why haven’t you heard of it before? Because, pure hydrocodone is seldom sold on its own.

Why is hydrocodone addiction so common?
Evidence shows that hydrocodone addiction is increasing amongst habitual users in the United States. Perhaps one of the most important factors causing this alarming rise is the fact that hydrocodone is consumed with drugs whose use and distribution is not as severely restricted. Pure hydrocodone is classified as a Schedule II substance, whereas when it is mixed with other non-narcotic ingredients to create other medicines, it is classified as a Schedule III drug. Schedule III drugs, such as Vicodin and Lortab, which contain hydrocodone, are not as strictly restricted as pure hydrocodone would be if it was sold as is. Thus its easy availability becomes one of the root causes for its devastating addiction. The lack of regulation makes these drugs susceptible to misuse and addiction.

Painkillers containing hydrocodone are available in tablet, capsule and syrup forms. Chief sources of hydrocodone’s easy availability can be traced to forged prescriptions, large scale thefts at pharmacies and deviations by unprincipled pharmacists from ethical medical standards.

Treating Hydrocodone Addiction
The good news is that hydrocodone addiction is definitely treatable. Methods for treating hydrocodone drug addicts are similar to treatment given to heroin addicts. In most cases long-term abuse of the drug changes the brain in a fundamental manner in that the drug starts controlling the brain’s role in establishing pleasure and motivational hierarchy. The drug effectively moves itself to the highest priority in the person’s motivational hierarchy, superseding all other drives. Thus a person feels compelled to use the drug to derive pleasure and this slowly leads to a persistent addiction. It is in this state that people may start pretending to be ill to obtain prescriptions, steal from pharmacies and even go “doctor shopping”. So, much so that it may become impossible to quit the drug on one’s own accord and the person may have to resort to undergoing treatment to get cured.

Fortunately, there are a number of treatment options to treat hydrocodone addiction and to help mange the withdrawal symptoms associated with the treatment. These options include medications, such as methadone, levo-alpha-acetyl-methadol (LAAM), and counseling. Usually, a patient is detoxified prior to any treatment for hydrocodone addiction. This, although not a treatment in itself, can help to alleviate the withdrawal symptoms while the patient learns to live a drug free life.

The most commonly felt effects of physical withdrawal from tobacco smoking are feelings of anger, depression, anxiety and restlessness. A chain smoker’s body experiences sharply rising and falling levels of nicotine on a daily basis. In the withdrawal stage, these cycles are coming to an end. Over years, the nicotine literally takes control of about 200 neurochemicals in the brain. The brain is slowly regaining control of these. This causes the intense emotional effects mentioned above.

Within the first 72 hours of withdrawal, if a user abstains totally from nicotine, they will begin to feel the gradual effects of recovery. The brain is now getting used to being lavished with nicotine-free oxygen.

During the early stages of withdrawal, time seems to drag endlessly. The first few weeks are interminable. It is important not to let this overshadow the greater purpose and really keep going with a positive attitude. One may experience an unbearable craving to grab a cigarette. During such an episode, it helps to take a look at the clock and actually time the duration of the ‘attack’. It will likely last no longer that 3 minutes, although it may seem endless this helps to gain perspective.

Most nicotine addicts complain of not being able to concentrate like before during the first few days of withdrawal. However, concentration levels begin to return to normal within two weeks.

In their smoking days, most nicotine addicts could skip a meal without feeling the hunger pangs. This was because nicotine triggered the process of releasing stored fats and sugars in our blood stream. This ends when nicotine intake stops. Hence, in order to prevent falling blood sugar levels, it is important not to skip meals.

Nicotine is a powerful stimulant. Our body needs time and a great deal of effort to learn to live without it. It is natural to feel tired, drained out and fatigued during the first few days.

Normal sleep patterns get disrupted during withdrawal. One might find oneself sleeping comparatively less. It takes a couple of weeks for regular sleep patters to establish.

Other common symptoms of physical withdrawal are tightness in the chest, slight sore throat, coughing with mucus, bad breath and headaches.
