There are a number of reasons why Oxycontin ranks so high. First, Oxycontin is an opiate. This semi-synthetic form of opiate is one of the most powerful pain medications available. Its Schedule II classification means that while it Oxycontin is very effective when used correctly, it must be both dispensed and monitored carefully due to its potency being a risk-factor for abuse and addiction.

A person can develop psychological dependence, physical dependence, or both, simply due to the effectiveness of this drug. The person may begin to rely so heavily on the drug for its painkilling effects that he builds up a tolerance to the drug, thus needing higher or more frequent doses in order to gain the results he needs. He may also become so accustomed to the absence of pain caused by Oxycontin use that he begins to fear pain enough to become completely dependent upon the drug.

Every year, around 13,000 Americans are murdered with guns; a similar number dies from AIDS, and approximately 10,000 people per year dies from consumption of illegal drugs. A recent article in The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that an estimated 113,000 hospitalized patients die each year from drugs which, by medical standards, are properly prescribed and properly administered. This is unbelievable: over 113,000 luckless patients died from taking the CORRECTLY prescribed medication at the correct dose. This makes prescription drugs the fourth leading killer in the US after cancer, heart disease, and strokes. Let me state this one more time: prescription drugs are now the 4th leading cause of death in America. FDA-approved pharmaceuticals, prescribed by a doctor, are killing at least, if not more, 113,000 Americans a year.

This number includes only drugs given properly and under normal circumstances. This excludes drugs administered in error or taken in attempted suicides. When errors of administration are included, the death toll is around 160,000 per year.

Cannabis, sativa, or more commonly known as marijuana, has been identified by the United Nations as the most widely used illegal substance worldwide. It has been banned in many countries however in other places, such as the United States of America, marijuana extract is used as a prescription drug. It is considered to be effective especially in relieving pain and in sedation. Aside from its analgesic and sedative effects, other medical uses of marijuana also include antispasmodic, anti-emetic, memory enhancer as well as to increase appetite. This has made marijuana effective especially as supportive care for cancer patients under chemotherapy. Weed, pot, mary jane, grass, mj, skunk, white widow and five fingers are only a few of the many names used for marijuana.

Over the years, people argue with regards to the fact whether marijuana is addictive or not. Many claim that the use of this drug is not addictive at all. Users say that they are simply using the drug as a pastime, or simply as a way to socialize. Despite the claims of many marijuana users that it is not addictive, a majority of the population believe that marijuana is indeed very addictive and destructive. The withdrawal symptoms itself prove that marijuana has addictive components that the body reacts with when suddenly stopped or not taken. Many marijuana users begin by smoking marijuana only to try and experience it once until they realize that they can no longer function and continue with their daily activities without using marijuana.
