Deciding to kick an alcohol addiction is difficult to do. However, for many who have decided to make such a positive, yet drastic change in their lives there are possibly still more difficult times ahead. Though, not everyone who kicks alcohol habit will experience alcohol withdrawal. Those who are most prone to experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms are individuals, who have been drinking for a long time. Frequent drinkers or heavy drinkers are mostly prone. When these people stop drinking suddenly their bodies react in a number of ways, which are characterized as alcohol withdrawal.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms range from mild to severe and can be psychological and physical. Yet the levels of severity depend on the individual. Some of the most common mild to moderate psychological symptoms include, but are not limited to, anxiety, rapid emotional changes, fatigue, depression, shakiness, and nervousness. Severe psychological symptoms are delirium tremens, which are hallucinations and serious bouts of confusion, and agitation. Physical alcohol withdrawal symptoms can include severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, palpitations, dilated pupils, and abnormal or involuntary movements. More severe physical symptoms include fevers, convulsions, and tremors.

Unfortunately, this type of symptoms can be so difficult to deal with that some individuals start to drink again just to ward off these symptoms. Often, starting a vicious cycle that some are never able to escape. The length of time that alcohol withdrawal symptoms last is usually specific to the individual. For some their symptoms last only a few days. Yet, others may experience these symptoms for a number of weeks, and in really severe cases months.

But, even with medical assistance treatment for this disease should not be treated lightly. Pharmacotherapy is the treatment of disease by using medicines. Common medications used to combat withdrawal are benzodiazepines, diazepam, propranolol, atenolol, and carbamazepine. It is important to note that these types of medications are used to combat the withdrawal symptoms that are at the mild or moderate level. Yet, from time to time these medications lose their effectiveness; so, patients increase dosages and begin to form a dependence on the prescription medicines used to help decrease their symptoms. Treatments for more severe symptoms like delirium tremens are usually given at a hospital or similar setting and under medical surveillance.

Alcohol withdrawal symptoms should not be taken lightly, seek medical help in order to have a better chance of avoiding the cycle of dependence.

Many people have habits they want to break. Some can do it with no problem and others have much difficulty. If you’re a drinker and want tips on how to quit drinking alcohol, here are ideas that may help you.

You must acknowledge that you have a real problem. If you are an occasional drinker, but want to quit, you have to make up your mind to do so. Otherwise, without starting of acknowledging your habit, you most likely will fail at quitting.

Next, let others that are close to you like your family and friends know of your decision to stop drinking. They will know you are serious and lend you the support you need to stay focused.

Refrain from socializing with people who drink. When they start consuming and having a merry old time, they will begin to encourage you to have just one drink or sip that will throw you off track.

Keep a calendar in your life. Mark off each day on the calendar in which you were successful at meeting your goal. The more days you have crossed off on your calendar, the better you’ll feel, and the more self motivation and confidence you’ll gain.

Eliminate temptation by throwing out your alcoholic beverages around the house. The more you keep around you, the more you may want to drink, making it hard to remain focused.

Enjoy the savings you will have by not buying alcohol beverages. Picture something you enjoy that you can buy with your savings. This will help you stick to your goal.

Fill your spare time with fun activities to take your mind off drinking. Replace drinking alcohol with water and other fruity type drinks. Another effective way of how to quit drinking alcohol is to be strong and just say no.

re you an alcoholic?

Not such a simple question. That one word “ALCOHOLIC” is absolutely loaded with tragedy. It screams failure, loser, wife-beater.

Drunk, lush, bum, wino, stewbelly, swillpot, tosspot, inebriate, barfly, and drunkard are all bedfellows of the alcoholic.

It is probably the worst kind of addiction that you could ever have…you are accepted legally in almost every town in the civilized world. The druggie has to hide, the smoker has to go outside, and the gambler…he can just hide the amount he loses.

But you can do your thing in full view of the public. Down to the pub…get drunk, get plastered. Stagger, reel, and pass out.

When is it time to stop? When is it time to admit what you are doing?

Do you need to admit anything? How do you KNOW?

I’ll tell you. Stop drinking for a month. If you can do that without any problems, you just passed the test. Are you an alcoholic?

Alcohol can pick up a person’s whole life and smash it up like an empty whiskey bottle. The only people not affected by alcoholics are those that don’t know them. That is because the alcoholic truly wreaks havoc all around them. I know. I was there. I was both the victim and the perpetrator.

The only way to stop the rot is to stop the drinking. It’s as simple, or as tough, as that.

If you are a heavy drinker, alcohol detox is going to be one of the hardest things you ever did in your life. You are not alone. Many millions of people have gone through it and come out the other end. The first thing you must do is admit you have a problem. You must admit this to yourself first…only then can you begin to heal yourself.

I found many, many underlying problems in my life when I finally stopped drinking. These are things that had been well hidden for years. Things I never wanted to face again. But, therein lays the truth. I had to face the truth…and so do you.

Fortunately, because this disease is so widespread, and so costly if left untreated, you will find many avenues through which you can travel in search of your healing. Some are going to cost you a fortune. Others will be given to you for free. Only you can know which route is for you.

I wish you good luck in your search my friend.

A common quandary of nearly everyone who wants to give up alcohol or any other addiction for that matter is timing. When is the right time to quit? And the refrain in our head goes something like this: No point quitting next week because it is my friend’s barbecue. After all it is summer and there will be lots of other barbecues coming up and plus a cold beer tastes really good on a hot day. The fall is not a good time either; too close to Thanksgiving. I absolutely cannot quit during Xmas and New Years. Next March may be a possibility – but that is a long way off, so no point thinking that far ahead. Your reasoning may not be exactly the same, but you get my meaning.

It is true than in order to quit or moderate drinking you need to decide. You need to make a decision and take some action. However, thinking that you can pick some day in the future and say – that is the day I am quitting – will not work. The day you absolutely have to stop or change your pattern of drinking is the day that you have a “moment of clarity”. A moment of clarity is a very small window of time in which the real you surfaces, the insanity of the addiction is held at bay, and there is a clear message in your brain that you must do something about your drinking or your addiction. That is the exact moment that you stop everything else you are doing and run for help. That is the moment that you throw everything you can at the addictive behavior – every resource that you know about.

If you choose to miss this window of opportunity you are taking a huge risk. You do not know when, if ever, you will have another such moment. When the moment of clarity ends, and you have taken no action, the addiction will swallow you up once more. The addiction never wants you to stop.

If you are reading this, you may be having a moment of clarity right now.

There is a big difference between getting and staying sober. And while many people suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction think that all they need to do is stop drinking or using and they will be OK, this idea couldn’t be further from the truth. Statistics show that more than 90% of all people who stop drinking or using drugs relapse quickly when they do not create and follow an aftercare recover plan.

Think of it like this; if you broke your leg and there were serious complications that kept you from walking for a very long time, your doctor would prescribe a therapy program to help you regain strength in your leg and help you walk again, and you would defiantly undertake and follow this therapy program, but for the chronic alcoholic and drug addict, one of the ugly effects of this deadly disease makes the alcoholic think he is OK, and doesn’t need help, and even after quitting drinking without aftercare this hideous disease will soon take over and he or she will again drink.

Depending how you got sober, there are many different ways that you could develop a recovery plan to continue and maintain your sobriety so that you can reenter your life and build upon the sobriety skills you have recently learned that help you to not drink or use drugs one day at a time.

If you detoxed in a private care facility, then you will have an aftercare specialist that will work with you to build a aftercare plan that you will use when you leave the detox facility. The aftercare specialist will go over options for continuing your sobriety, such as AA or NA meetings, attending private counseling sessions, and securing a sober living home. Each part of your sober recovery plan will help you slowly regain your physical, emotional, and spiritual strength while you build a new foundation in your new world of sobriety with healthy structure for every part of your new sober life, and with each new day you continue to stay sober you will see how important your recovery plan was.

By going to 12th step meetings, you will be building and maintaining a support group of individuals that have had the same problems and issues and know how you feel. Your support group is always there for you, and even late at night when the urge to drink or use drugs can be extremely hard, you will have phone numbers of your new friends in sobriety you can call to help you get through that tough situation.

Choosing to move into a sober living home will also help you with your day to day transition into your new sober life, by having people close to you who can help you when you have questions or issues pop up. Sober living is also very important for men and women who were once in abusive living situations, or when the place there were living before they got sober is not a safe environment and where a spouse or loved one is still drinking or abusing drugs.

Your commitment to staying sober one day at a time includes everything you do in your new sober life as well as following your recovery plan that will help you strengthen and reinforce your new life in sobriety…One day at a Time!
