A drug addiction is a compulsive disorder. Addiction can be of varied kinds, namely drugs, alcohol, gambling, spending, smoking, sex, eating or any other behavior. A person hit by this is often unsatisfied and restless. Drug addiction in layman’s terms would be dependence on chemicals or on unwanted plants for the sake of getting high. This disorder requires very high consumption of drugs in order to fulfill drug seeking behavior, and is very vulnerable to relapse.

The following are some of the most common drugs that are physically and mentally addictive.

1) Marijuana

Marijuana is one of the most commonly used drugs. The drug is excessively popular amongst teenagers. Commonly known as pot, weed, grass, herb, Maryjane, and the devil’s cabbage. The effects can last for around 1-3 hours. It can cause a lot of harm to the lungs and a person loses his or her concentration power. It causes severe smoking habits that are difficult to quit, and prolonged consumption can also lead to cancer. There are few addiction treatments available for marijuana abusers, because it is not considered physically addictive.

2) Alcohol

The general concepts of alcohol abuse are wrong. Alcoholism is “alcohol dependence.” Alcoholics are the ones who seek help for a problem related to his or her drinking. Symptoms are craving (a strong desire to drink), loss of control (the inability to save oneself from drinking any time), physical dependence (the aftereffects of quitting alcohol, such as nausea, sweating, and shakiness), and tolerance (the need drink more and more to get “drunk”). Alcohol abuse differs from alcoholism in that it does not include an extremely strong craving for alcohol, loss of control over drinking or physical dependence. There are a lot of treatment facilities that treat alcoholism. Drug rehabilitation centers are also present, and most importantly an alcoholic requires emotional support from the near and dear ones.

3) Ecstasy

One of the more dangerous drugs, it can bring about deadly reaction in the abuser. According to some users its one of the hottest drugs around. Ecstasy is often referred to as disco biscuit, go, “X”, love drug, and hug drug. Ecstasy is one of the harshest drugs around, as it causes accelerated dehydration, overheating, and may eventually lead to death.

4) Cocaine

Also known as “crack” in layman’s words. It is a strongly addictive stimulant that affects the brain directly. It is one the most popular drugs. And is consumed in great amounts. Cocaine is consumed by either chewing, snorting, mainlining, injecting, or smoking. It’s effects include; increased energy, decreased appetite, mental alertness, high blood pressure, addiction, restlessness, and hallucinations. There has been an enormous amount of cocaine used over the years. It is one of the most common cited drugs around. As cocaine is a strong drug, it causes harsh effects on the mind and body so the treatment process is very harsh.

5) Methamphetamines

Methamphetamines are often called speed, meth, chalk, ice, crystal, crank, and glass. They are a powerfully addictive stimulant that dramatically affects the central nervous system. It comes in many forms and can be snorted, smoked, orally ingested, or injected. Their effects are; increase in activity, hyperthermia, paranoia, hallucinations, stroke, and weight loss. It will usually remains present in the brain for a longer duration, which ultimately leads to prolonged stimulant effects.

6) Hallucinogens

These are drugs that causes hallucinations (illusory perception). Hallucinogens cause their effects by by disrupting the interaction of nerve cells and then spread throughout the body. They are commonly known as acid, blotter, and blooter acid, dots, pane, and zen They generally react on the mind for around 12 hours within a span 30 minutes of administration. Prolonged use causes neural disorders and malfunctions of the brain.) It is one of the most highly addictive drugs. There is a misconception about this drug that it does not lead to addiction. Heroin is a processed form of morphine. It is often called smack, skag, and junk. The effects include; a rush, depression, abscesses, arthritis, and collapsed veins.

Getting involved in drugs is very easy. It might take just one or two tries to get hooked without even realizing it. However, escaping from the abyss of drug addiction can take much longer, usually several months or even years.

The process of rehabilitation can be very difficult, especially if you have been on drugs for quite a while. There will be several instances when you will feel the need to take whatever substance it is you have been feeding your body. During these times, it is important to be strong by turning away from those temptations.

Regardless of how long you have been using drugs, you can always stop and rebuild your life. Here are some of the things you can do to break away from drug addiction and restart your life.

(1). Find a hobby.

After finishing rehabilitation treatment, you will be released back into the world with a fresh lease on life. The type of life you will lead depends on the kinds of decisions you make. Many people have been in that same situation and with one wrong decision; they completely erased everything they had been working for during their months of recovery.

The best way to avoid the temptation of going back to your old lifestyle is to find yourself a hobby, or better yet, a job. What is it that you like to do? Find an activity that will occupy your mind.

(2). Rekindle your relationships with the people around you.

You can avoid drug addiction by reconnecting with your family. They are the people who will stand by you especially during this challenging period in your life. Do not alienating yourself from them because of shame or fear as it would accomplish nothing. Surround yourself with their love and support, and you will be able to recover much faster.

(3). Meet with your counselor regularly.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that a person cannot benefit from therapy anymore just because they have been released from the confines of the rehab center. It will still be a good idea to seek your old counselors for advice, but remember you will also need to make these decisions on your own eventually.

(4). Learn from your experience.

Even after you start living a normal life again, substance cravings may come every now and then. When the temptation gets too strong, think about all the hardships that you have gone through because of your drug addiction. Take a deep breath and let the cravings pass, because surely, no one wants to endure the pain and hardship all over again.

(5). Re-evaluate yourself.

You might think that you were being true to yourself before you got into drugs but apparently, it wasn’t really the best “you”, if you ponder for a moment. Try to do some self-reflection to find out who you really can be. A good way to do this is by thinking of alternatives to the bad choices you once made.

(6). Be patient.

Recovery from drug addiction is a slow and sometimes painful process. All you can do is to endure it and have faith that there is a much better life waiting for you in the near future. Do not expect the cure for your drug addiction overnight, as this will only bring about more anger and frustration.

(7). Keep trying no matter what.

Some recovering drug addicts fall off from the program because of their lack of willpower and determination. If you want to succeed in breaking away from your drug addiction, then you should hang in there no matter what the circumstances may be. Think positive and believe in yourself, and you will soon be completely free of your drug addiction.

Drug addiction doesn’t just suddenly occur one day. Conditions predispose a person to addiction, and circumstances allow drug addiction to continue. For example, a person who is bored, stressed or depressed may look for solutions to alleviate that boredom, stress or depression. For them, if it’s accessible, marijuana may be the solution. Some say marijuana opens the door to other, more harmful drugs, and in that way marijuana itself is highly dangerous. Is marijuana in fact a ‘gateway’ to other drugs? Here are five answers to that question from experts in the field of drug addiction, substance abuse and treatment.

YES. According to a recent study by the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, there was a pronounced difference in future drug use between kids who used marijuana and those who did not. In fact, teens who smoke marijuana are 85 times more likely to use cocaine than those who do not.

YES. In a study of 311 young adult pairs in 2003, Michael T. Lynskey, Ph.D., found that “Individuals who used cannabis by age 17 years had odds of other drug use, alcohol dependence, and drug abuse/dependence that were 2.1 to 5.2 times higher than those of their co-twin, who did not use cannabis before age 17 years… In particular, early access to and use of cannabis may reduce perceived barriers against the use of other illegal drugs and provide access to these drugs.”

YES. According to Narconon, one of the most successful drug rehabilitation programs in the world, marijuana is a “sticky” drug that lodges itself in the fatty tissues of a person and remains there long after use, sometimes for several months or longer. As trace amounts re-enter the bloodstream due to exercise or other vigorous physical activity, cravings start up. The marijuana user is forced to locate a drug source (other users and sellers). The source will sometimes diversify their offerings which leads the marijuana user on to other drugs.

YES. In the 2002 report, “Initiation of Marijuana Use: Trends, Patterns and Implications” from the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the younger children are when they first use marijuana, the more likely they are to use cocaine and heroin and become dependent on drugs as adults.

YES. Tony Bylsma is a Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor with more than 30 years experience. “Very few individuals use other illegal drugs without first having used marijuana,” he says. “It’s not a sure bet in every last case, but marijuana users are in a position where they are in regular contact with users and sellers of other types of drugs

So, it is NOT true that people who use marijuana have some compulsion to try other drugs, the chance they will try other drugs, from based on the numbers-greatly increases.”

There are so many negative results of drug abuse that it is a wonder that the problem persists in society. Drug abuse can refer to any type of substance abuse. Some substances are legally obtainable, others are available only on prescription and many are completely illegal.

You may be worried that a friend or family member may be abusing drugs but you are not sure what to look for. Do not ignore your hunch. If you perceive changes in the person’s health or behavior that the person themselves is reluctant to explain then you have good enough reason to suspect drug abuse.

One of the first results of drug abuse is the appearance of drug paraphernalia in or around the person’s possession. Look out for needles, glasses and mirrors used for snorting, cigarette papers, blackened spoons used for heating substances, empty solvent canisters etc. These items can often be found in the trash.

Does the person you suspect suddenly need a lot of money? Drug abuse is often a costly behavior and the person is often desperate for money to feed their addiction. You may notice that even if the person needs a lot of money there is no apparent evidence of their spending. Indeed, you may notice that they are looking more and more impoverished rather than the other way round.

Some of the most obvious results of drug use are changes in behavior. Sometimes drug addicts are on cycles of manic highs followed by depressed lows. They may also may be more secretive in their activities. You may notice new people in the person’s life who are equally unstable in their behavior.

The worst results of drug abuse are deterioration in the person’s health. There could be drastic loss of weight, anemia, persistent coughing, including coughing up blood, slowed speech and extreme lethargy. If you are worried that someone you know is abusing drugs get professional advice immediately.

Click to read more at http://www.DrugAbuseFocus.com or visit a list of Drug Abuse Rehab Centers.

Jason Regrets is a pen name coined to expand the discussion on and awareness of drug addiction and abuse as well as the negative consequences that come with addiction and abuse behavior.

You should seek professional help if you have or think you might have a drug problem or if you know of someone who has or you think may have a problem.

doctor present for each detox procedure that takes place in the detox center. A medial

staff is there to assist the addict in rapidly detoxing from the substance of abuse and to

make the process as pain free as possible. When a person enters a detox center they are

usually doing so under the advice of their doctor. Most detox centers will only take a

patient that has been referred by a medical doctor.

An addiction treatment center is available for a variety of substance abuse problems. These

problems can include alcohol addiction, narcotic abuse, and chemical dependency.
Many times a person will enter a detox center and have multiple addictions that need to be

addictions so that the person can cleanse their body of all toxic substances at one time.

The more addiction that a person has when they enter a detox center the longer it will take

centers that have 24-hour supervision over their members. Remember: You want your loved ones

This article will give you information on the problems of using drugs and their effects on health and work. The amount of medicinal information available is inadequate. Most people understand that medicines are not good, but they do not always think about how the consequences of medicine uses can affect their work.

This is not a replacement for substance mistreatment. If a person is having problems related to the misuse of medicines, he or she should be referred to a qualified substance abuse expert. This guidance is only designed as an educational program for employment seekers. The medicines that will be discussed in this topic are alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, and illicit (marijuana, cocaine, heroine, LSD, etc.) medicines as complete group.

Begin the lesson by discussing medicine tests at work. Inform trainees that employers have the right to test for illegal medicine use. More than 70 per cent of illegal medicine users are employed. Of people who called a drugs help line, 70 per cent indicated they used cocaine while working, 60 per cent reported that medicines unfavorably affected their job performance, and 15-18 per cent had stolen from employers to support their medicine habit. Medicine using employees at General Motors average 30-40 sick days per year compared to 4-5 sick days for non users. Researches found that substance abuse is the number one health problem in the country.

When employees fail to work, they need to pay sick days and overtime for replacement employees. Deprived performance leads to work not getting done on time and bad quality. When products and services are not done properly, they need to be done over. Repeating any procedure costs money. Workplace injuries cost organizations a lot of money in avoidance program, employee”s compensation, and replacement employees. All of these factors lead to higher cost. High costs leads to money being spent on training new employees.

The bad effects of alcohol and illegal medicine use should be discussed. Use of alcohol or illegal medicines while working is definitely related to bad performance and accidents. Long-term abuse of alcohol or illegal medicines is linked to health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and liver disease. Even occasional parting the night before office can impact a person”s job. Calling in sick and bad job performance when at work can affect a person”s job evaluations and opportunities to move forward in the organization.

I hope in this article you get some useful information on how medicines and drugs can ruin your career.

A drug and alcohol intervention is a process of overcoming the barriers, getting across to the addicts and making them realize where they stand and what can be done to come out of the spell of substance addiction.

Intervention for drug abuse is a wake up call for someone who is going off the deep end. It is an attempt to put a safety net under the person whose life is spiraling downwards out of control. Successful interventions are behavioral interrupters. They address the problem, set boundaries, and offer solutions. They penetrate the addict’s denial system and are a turning point their life and ideally result in the individual going into a drug and alcohol rehab program.

A drug and alcohol intervention is an honest, heartfelt, communication. Intervention is an opportunity for family, friends and co-workers to say, “Hey, we’re watching you die, Man. It’s tearing our hearts out. What you do effects us too! We want you to get some help!” An intervention of truth, piercing the protective armor of denial, is an incredible gift of love. It is opportunity of hope for a new life, for both the addict and his family.

Recovery does not have to be a painful process. Life is painful enough. Recovery should feel good. New alternative treatments that are holistic in nature are having remarkable results. In the past, addicts have resisted treatment, because it seemed more painful and difficult, than their active addiction. Thankfully, times have changed. Alternative treatment modalities have come a long way from the old days “break them down, let them suffer and feel the pain so they don’t do this again” mentality. Today we know there is a lot more to recovery than shoving the twelve steps down someone’s throat.

Healthy treatment does not just give you a time out, put a band-aid on a wound the size of a decubicus ulcer, and send you on your way. Healthy treatment does not shame or degrade a human being, instead it heals low self esteem and empowers the individual to reach new heights. Healthy treatment gives you what you need to feel good physically, emotionally and spiritually. Healthy treatment reignites the spirit and restores the joy of living. Healthy treatment is holistic treatment of mind, body and spirit.

Recently the Art & Entertainment Network’s show INTERVENTION, introduced America to a heroin addict using in her bathroom. We witnessed her progress while in treatment at North Miami’s G&G Holistic Addiction Treatment Program, better known as THE HOLISTIC CENTER. A sober year later, this woman is now working for the treatment center which helped her on her path to recovery. The before and after pictures are astonishing. We see two different people: 1) a heroin addict standing in a six hour long vegetative state in front of her bathroom mirror, nodding off after shooting up, and 2) a bright eyed, confident, joyful woman who is an inspiration to others, and who is self-supporting financially and emotionally. Her intervention was the bridge that transported her from the dead zone and gave her the opportunity to recover.

Think of an intervention as a cargo ship that transports the addict from active addiction to a destination, which is the protection of a addiction treatment facility. The captain is the facilitator. The crew is made of up of trusted family, friends, and co-workers. You have done your research and have a timetable and destination in mind.

Your cargo is your loved one and his emotional baggage. As Captain, you must steer the ship. Each crew member takes a turn at the helm, speaking his truth in love, chipping away at the addict’s anchor of denial. By the time, each person has shared their truth, feelings, needs, fears, and hope, the family will have traveled a great distance from denial into truth, and thoroughly defined the problem. It is now time to offer a solution.

Holistic Treatment is a solution, a blessing. Imagine treatment as a well of healing waters, not a prison from which you need to escape. It is imperative that the addict understand that they are receiving a gift, not punishment. Regardless of the mask’s of arrogance and defiance, the core of every addict is shame, guilt, self-hatred and fear. Love motivates and empowers. Acceptance waters the soul and facilitates healing and spiritual wellness.

In this day and age, when addiction recovery treatment is a billion dollar industry with pitiful success ratios, it is imperative to know that there is HOLISTIC TREATMENT that works, addressing the mind, body, and soul. Holistic treatment not only has the highest recovery rates, individuals seem to thrive, find genuine happiness, joy for living, and peace of mind.

Substance abuse or drug abuse is one of the worst cases of injury that one could inflict on his or her own body. The reasons for getting afflicted with this disease are many. It could be that the person was under some kind of pressure. It could also be that the person just wanted to prove himself to his peers and others so self proclaimed mandarins.

Whatever the reason might be, the end result is that the individual finds himself getting caught up in a bottomless pit that only becomes more and more painful and taxing as the time progresses. People who realize that they are in trouble in the early stages are the luckiest as that is the first step towards recovery. The very acknowledgement of the fact that the person is suffering from a symptom that is taking a lot of toll on his body and life is the first most positive step on the path to recovery.

The second step would be to hold the hands of the people who are the most experienced in dealing with such situations. There are many drugs detox centers that offer the most comprehensive and the most well researched drug detox programs that can help the people suffering from this malaise.

The addiction treatment programs offered at these centers are well researched and very well organized. They are also carried out by the people who themselves have been undergoing some kind of drug detox programs and are very much aware of the pitfalls that could be associated with it. The addiction treatment programs that are offered at these centers are designed and developed by the most knowledgeable authorities in the field. Care is also taken that the patient persists with the addiction treatment program even after he has been released from the rehabilitation.

Drug and substance abuse among teenagers, is substantial. According to a national survey, amongst youth age 12 to 17, about 1.1 million meet the diagnostic criteria for dependence on drugs in the United States. Different substances/drugs lend themselves to different groups of symptoms. The most glaring symptom in all cases is a change, sometimes a radical one, in behavior.

10 Things:

1.	If you wish to identify a potential drug abuser in your home, the first area that you should look for is sudden personality change that includes abrupt changes in work or school attendance, quality of work, work output, grades, discipline etc.
2.	Unusual flare-ups or outbreaks of temper, sudden jitteriness, nervousness, or aggression are a major denotation of drug addiction or abuse.
3.	Persistent drug abuse may also lead to withdrawal from responsibility & loss of interest in what were once favorite hobbies and pursuits. This may come packaged with an unusual laziness.
4.	Changes in friends and reluctance to have friends visit or talk about them and/or association with known substance abusers should also be taken seriously.
5.	Some drugs may lead to redness in eyes which the abuser tends to hide away by wearing sunglasses. So wearing sunglasses at inappropriate times is a potential giveaway.
6.	Continual wearing of long-sleeved garments particularly in hot weather or reluctance to wear short-sleeved attire may be an attempt to conceal the rashes on the skin, which are common side effects of drug abuse, or needle marks on lower arm, leg or bottom of feet.
7.	Now drugs don’t come free! If you find your kids borrowing money from friends, co-workers or from you unusually frequently, you should better be argus-eyed because this may get your near and dear ones in some serious trouble.
8.	An unusual increased secretiveness or secretive behavior regarding actions and possessions is a certain indication that something fishy is going on.
9.	Some physical signs of substance abuse include slurred speech, memory impairment, and lack of concentration & impairment of attention along with slowed or staggering walk due to poor physical coordination. This may also lead to tremors or shakes of hands, feet or head and an irregular heartbeat.
10.	If you have a doggy nose, try smelling his/her breath & clothes! There may be a smell of substance/drug on breath, body or clothes of the abuser.

Sometimes, in lack of conclusive evidence, it becomes difficult to arrive at a ratiocination of substance abuse diagnosis. There are a number of practical and empirical methods to determine drug abuse, among them being urine, blood or hair follicle testing & subsequent detection by GC/MS/ELISA.

A disturbing fact sheet…

Pain relievers are medicines that reduce or relieve headaches, sore muscles, arthritis or related aches and pains. There are many different pain reliever drugs. While some of them are prescription drugs, yet many of these are available over-the-counter (OTC) e.g. aspirin, naproxen (Aleve) & ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) etc. Many such non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs are available only at prescribed doses. Some of the most powerful pain relievers come under the category of narcotics.

In the United States, data generated by some recent surveys on drug abuse is quite disturbing. Data from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse found that almost 3 million adolescents and about 7 million young adults from ages 18 to 25 had used prescription drugs for non-medical purposes at least once in their lives.

Today teenagers are not using as much cocaine, crack, LSD, and ecstasy as the teenagers of the 1960’s. Nowadays, kids have found other ways and means to get that high; painkillers & other prescription drugs are being abused at record levels as is aptly indicated in NSDUH data. This up coming generation of prescription drug abusers has been given the name “Generation Rx!”

Increase in prescription drug abuse is most prominent for pain relievers, but use of stimulants and tranquilizers is also rising as young people who abuse prescription drugs are also more likely to use illegal drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine, or hallucinogens. According to a 2005 study conducted by the National Center of Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, the number of Americans who abuse or use prescription drugs illegally now exceeds the number of Americans who abuse cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and heroin combined.

Abusers sometimes disrupt the time-release formula of the drug to speed up absorption, often chewing the tablets, crushing them and snorting the powder, or dissolving them in water and injecting the drug to get a fast high. This may cause adverse set of cross-reactions and may prove fatal as in the rural areas of the Eastern United States, especially in Virginia and West Virginia where several deaths have resulted due to mixing of Oxycontin with other painkillers, alcohol, and marijuana.

Pain reliever drugs can affect regions of the brain that mediate what we perceive as pleasure, resulting in the initial euphoria that many opioids produce. They can also produce drowsiness, constipation, and, depending upon the amount taken, depress breathing. Taking a large single dose could cause severe respiratory depression or death.

Some people mistakenly think that prescription drugs are more powerful because you need a prescription for them. However, it’s possible to abuse or become addicted to over-the-counter (OTC) pain killer medications too.

The dangers of prescription drug abuse can be made even worse if people take drugs in a way they aren’t supposed to. Ritalin may seem harmless because it’s prescribed even for little kids with ADHD but when a person snorts or injects Ritalin, it can be serious. Same holds true for most of the pain reliever drugs too.

Some points to prevent the abuse of prescription drugs:

•Always follow medication directions carefully.
•Don’t increase or decrease doses without talking with your doctor.
•Don’t stop taking medication on your own.
•Don’t crush or break pills.
•Be clear about the drug’s effects on driving and other daily tasks.
•Learn about the drug’s potential interactions with alcohol, other prescription medicines, and over-the-counter medicines.
•Inform your doctor about your past history of substance abuse.
