Meth devastates, it kills, and it ruins otherwise promising young lives. Almost half of all American parents never speak with their kids about the dangers of meth, and reflecting this, an astonishing percentage of high school kids either see little harm with trying the drug, or even worse, see some benefit.

Crystal meth is scary. Incredibly addictive recreational use can so easily progress to addiction, and the physical, mental spiritual harm done by an addiction to meth is beyond compare.

The health risks of meth

Meth addicts can expect greatly accelerated physical aging, cognitive declines, early dementia, and a fantastically increased risk for a host of diseases and cancers. Characteristic meth mouth is but one of the obvious and external signs of the damage of the drug, and a few years of meth use visibly ages the body by decades. Crystal meth is the most destructive drug in America today. Teens can get it, they love to experiment with available drugs, and they are not well aware of the real risks of meth use and abuse.

There are few drugs more addictive than crystal meth, and the intense and pleasurable high so easily seduces recreational users into abuse and addiction; and with addiction, the physical, mental and spiritual devastation is tragic.

Meth addicts age by literally decades in a few short years of abuse. Meth mouth (meth destroys the teeth) is but one of the obvious and external faces of the damage of meth, and the internal damage is just if not more severe. Meth use increases the risks for a host of cancers, for fatal heart disease, for Parkinson’s and even for very early dementia. I remember a conversation I had with a police detective some 35 years ago. He was telling me about what a mother had told him over the phone about her teenaged son. “Once he’s out of the house, he’s not our problem.” The detective, who served an upscale suburban community, was explaining to me that parents can be irresponsible and in his mind almost criminal in their neglect of children.

Parents are the most important people in a child’s life. They set the tone for everything. If parents abuse drugs, the children are likely to abuse drugs. If husbands beat their wives, their sons will likely be wife beaters too. If parents divorce and abandon their children, those children are not likely to become model parents either. Parents are the front line in the prevention of drug abuse and there’s so much they can do to try to secure the best possible future for their children.

What kinds of people are prone to addictions or substance abuse? Many people are susceptible to these problems, especially people who suffer from depression, low self-esteem, loneliness, excessive stress, or are in a relationship they don’t like and don’t feel they can get out of. Young people who have difficulty fitting in, are constantly under attack by bullies and peer pressure, have a lot of stress at home or are extremely unhappy with themselves are also individuals to watch for signs of possible addiction or substance abuse.

Can We Stop Our Youth From the Perils of Drug Abuse?

Teen Drug Abuse

A teenager with a family history of drug abuse and a lack of social skills can move rapidly from the level of experimentation to grave abuse or dependency. Some other teenagers, who have no family history of such abuse, may also reach the level of utter dependency. Although any prediction is almost impossible, teenagers with a family history of alcohol or drug abuse should especially abstain and refrain from experimenting.

Drug use among teenagers has reached tragic levels. It Doesn’t matter how vigilant you are, your teenagers will definitely be introduced to drugs at school, the very place you think should be a safe environment. Mrs. Reagan’s ‘Just say no to drugs’ campaign was a complete failure. The fact is that teens view adults as old fuddy-duddies that have never seen the outside of a paper bag. Adults, try as they may, face an uphill battle in safe guarding their young ones from the ravaging effects of drugs.
The battle is made tougher by the fact that most of us have prescription medications in our medicine cabinets. When confronting the issue of teenagers and drugs, you have to give them a rational argument that differentiates between necessary prescriptions and illegal drugs. This isn’t easy. Some well known prescription medicines are being peddaled in schools as a way to get high. Kids don’t know that these prescriptions are issued in duplicate or triplicate, as a way to control the use of certain narcotics. Not having experienced a legitimate need for these drugs themselves, they could well come to the conclusion that their parents are enjoying some high that they are for some reason being forbidden.
