Which is the Most Addicting Substance?

With the advances in scientific researches, scientists have been able to enumerate a number of addicting substance consumed in various forms in the society. With this done one other thing that came in mind was to be able to compare them in terms addicting potential and popularity. Though any given results have been found to be greatly dependent on culture and geographical location, it has been agreed that Nicotine is one of the most addicting substances known.

Nicotine is a chemical substance found in the tobacco plant and its products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, and smokeless tobacco (such as chewing tobacco and snuff). Nicotine addiction comes about by the consumption of any of these substances. The most popular of these forms are cigarettes and cigars which are greatly advertised in movies and other shows. They owe their popularity to the fact that through these forms, nicotine is quickly delivered to the brain. Therefore the sensation of pleasure addicts intended to get is acquired easily.

In the most popular forms of nicotine which are cigarettes and cigars, one of their common features is that it effects in the body can be branched into

* effects of smoke in the lungs
* effects of nicotine in the blood system and other organs

In most of the campaigns against tobacco consumption, focus is laid on the effects of the smoke in the lungs. This can explained in that it is easier for a person to imagine the smoke damaging the respiratory tract than to imagine that the hormonal composition of the blood has been altered. However nicotine in the blood causes more damages than we can imagine and affects almost the whole body including blood pressure, heart rate, endocrine system, gastrointestinal tract, and skeletal system.

Because of the addictive potential of nicotine, the withdrawal symptoms are diverse and include: depressed mood, insomnia (inability to sleep), irritability, frustration, or anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, decreased heart rate, and increased appetite or weight gain. However the two main methods to go about them so far are by medication and by education (rehab by a changing of mind).

Nelson Kana is presently a Youth worker in a Local Youth Ministry in Cameroon and has been carrying out researches on drug and alcohol rehab among youths. He is one strong advocate of rehab by a changing of mind.
